For the most part I agree. I don't mind having some focus on what is going on with so-and-so character's life, but I don't want to hear about it more than the case of the week. The show is about SOLVING CASES, not about the fact that so-and-so is pregnant now OMG BABIES or that so-and-so found out OH HEY WOW THEY HAVE A SECRET MISSING BROTHER or whatever. I think the thing that bothers me the most in some of the character-focus stuff with procedurals is that it often feels (to me) so… soap-opera-ish. Like, the things the characters go through feel blown out of proportion or are just SO off the wall, it's ridiculous.

Though if the character focus ties into actually crime solving/whatever, that I'm all for it. I really liked the 333 Killer (I think that's what it was called?) stuff from CSI NY a few years back. It focused on Mac and fleshed out his backstory a bit, but it was also very much about murder.

I....have to admit I take a guilty pleasure in characters with soap opera-esque, OTT, convoluted, secret-filled traumatic lives. When I actually like a show, I like realistic characterization, but I'm such a pathetic sucker for piling on the epic soap opera drama when it comes to shows and characters that I don't have any emotional investment in :) It's like dumb guy comedies: I know it's shlock, but I get such a kick out of it. And in procedural dramas, it's always so much more intense, better written, better acted, and faster-moving than in a daytime soap. So...I guess I'm contributing to those shows' ratings, even though I don't think those shows are actually good.
