Heh, that was me with the X-Files. I didn't remotely give a shit about the conspiracy theory stuff, I just watched it for the monster of the week episodes.

Also, have you ever watched The First 48, OP? It's a reality show, so obviously it's not the same, but if you're interested in the crime-solving part, it might be worth looking into.

If only it wasn't narrated and shot (and musically scored) in that stupid, overly-dramatic way. I wish they'd quit doing that for so *many* shows.

lol, we're exact opposites, anon. I could give two shits about the majority of the cases (well, on Criminal Minds. I've never watched any of the CSIs) but I want all the character focus and team interaction I can get. My favorite episodes are always those that focus on the characters. Honestly, I'd take the cases out completely...but then it wouldn't be a procedural.

But hey...different strokes :)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is pretty much me, also about Criminal Minds. I see a ton of complaining from people who want the focus to be on the cases and don't give a damn about the characters' personal lives, but that's my favorite part.

eh for 10 years you just can't solve problems without making these characters evolve etc. I love character storylines.

I am SO THE OPPOSITE GODDAMN
story is important, but if I can't give a fuck about the characters I can't give that many fucks about the show

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of agree. =/ I mean, some of the character-oriented drama was interesting in Criminal Minds, but the case eps will always be my absolute favorites.

I like both kind of shows, tbh. Straight-forward procedurals like the original Law & Order are great, but so are more character based ones like SVU and Criminal Minds. It is just about appreciating the show for what it is, so if case-based shows are what you prefer, CM is probably not your type of show since it does that a lot. I'm currently marathoning CM, and sometimes I wonder if the team ever investigates a case with getting personally involved xD

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like shows to be like this, but I really don't like shows to be its opposite either. I like it when the cases and the characters fit together and compliment each other and have an exchange of influence, so you can see the importance of the cases to the characters involved, and the importance of the characters to the cases at hand. I like it when a show is put together in such a way that it feels like you can't really understand a character without taking into account the cases they were involved in, and can't completely grasp the significance of the cases without understanding the personality of the characters involved. That way, there isn't really any noticeable difference between character-oriented and case-oriented episodes: it all fits together and has mutual significance.

And this applies to all plotty work dramas, not just crime shows. It's a huge reason for why I loved The West Wing and The X-Files so much: the characters and the development of their personalities and the progression of their lives were very important to you the viewer and you had a big emotional investment in them, but their lives completely revolved around and were inseparably entwined with their work, which was defined by the episode plots and storyarcs.

So true. That's why I can't be bothered to watch them.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree. I do watch mainly for the plot/cases. Though for Criminal Minds, I must admit, the characters grew on me after a while, and I do not mind little excursions into their personal lives.

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
For the most part I agree. I don't mind having some focus on what is going on with so-and-so character's life, but I don't want to hear about it more than the case of the week. The show is about SOLVING CASES, not about the fact that so-and-so is pregnant now OMG BABIES or that so-and-so found out OH HEY WOW THEY HAVE A SECRET MISSING BROTHER or whatever. I think the thing that bothers me the most in some of the character-focus stuff with procedurals is that it often feels (to me) so… soap-opera-ish. Like, the things the characters go through feel blown out of proportion or are just SO off the wall, it's ridiculous.

Though if the character focus ties into actually crime solving/whatever, that I'm all for it. I really liked the 333 Killer (I think that's what it was called?) stuff from CSI NY a few years back. It focused on Mac and fleshed out his backstory a bit, but it was also very much about murder.

I feel like Law and Order and spinoffs is the best at giving you mostly cases, while also giving you real people and not generic character # 4. People grow but their growth is directly affected by the cases they're pursuing. I'm fine with either character or case, but getting both is why I like L&O.

[identity profile] shinyhappypanic.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
lol at how half this secret is totally aimed at prentiss.

for the most part I'm with you, OP, but I do love little personal-life shots when they have to do with the cases. Like when Reed was addicted to whatever drug it was after the episode he was held hostage, when Jack and Hotch had moments after Hailey, and when JJ married Will.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the exact same way with most procedurals. Which is probably why I'm usually not tempted to join a fandom for one.

I used to be really into Cold Case, and it always annoyed me when an episode focused a lot on the main characters. To be fair, I did like them and some of their subplots, but I just didn't care about them as much as the main case.

[identity profile] naturedichotomy.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
This is me! \o/ My mom and I sit here and yell at the TV when there's too much character drama bullshit.

... Except for Bones. For some reason, I'm down with character drama bullshit on that show and would totally miss it if it disappeared.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean, Anon. I think CM mostly does a good job of not focusing on the characters' personal lives more than the case, but the past couple seasons have sort of leaned more toward personal stuff. That makes me leery of the show's direction, which is a shame 'cause it's one of my faves.

CSI bothers me more. I just did NOT want to hear so much about Catherine's loser husband, Warrick's gambling/booze problems, Nick's involvement with a prostitute or Sarah's ANYTHING, much like Grissom/Sarah. Ugh. Just typing that annoys me that I know so much about this stupid show.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
OMG ME TOO. This is actually the reason why I stopped watching shows like House, and Bones, and Criminal Minds - because although I love the whole crime-solving aspect, after a couple of seasons, the focus ALWAYS fucking changes from the science to the personal problems of the main characters, and it really pisses me off. I don't give a shit what's going on in their lives.

Also, it really pisses me off when a crime show has the completely overdone "serial-killer-toying-with-crime-team-member" episode. Every single fucking crime-solving show has one of these bad guy/good cop cat-and-mouse storylines, and it's so fucking old and annoying.

[identity profile] morvith.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, anon. I must admit, though, that when it comes to CSI (too sqeamish for CM), I'm a very casual viewer: I'll watch it from time to time, when there's literally nothing else on TV, so of course I'll be more interested in the case-of-the-week rather than reconnect with characters arcs I missed entirely.

[identity profile] darkmanifest.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. This is why the original Law & Order will always and forever be my favorite procedural show, I never had to deal with much of any of the main characters' bullshit, so I could watch the episodes in any order and many times over without getting annoyed. Leverage is pulling a close second in that field, too - so episodic that, three seasons in, I still don't know detailed character histories, where most of them live, or even, for two of them, their full names, and I love it. And it makes it more exciting the few moments I doget a rare glimpse into who they are and where they come from. I wish more shows were like that and maintained it as consistently as L&O did.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the reason why I am hot for -- and will forever be only hot for -- the original Law & Order series. No other show has managed it like they did to keep all the character drama bullshit behind the scenes/off to the side and focus only on the case at hand.

[identity profile] ladyknightanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the character arcs AND cases on Criminal Minds. It's one of my most favorite shows because I think it actually has a delicate balance. We see characters developing and pertinent moments on screen, but a lot of build-up behind the scenes, which is great because I hate when extraneous drama is shoved down my throat - like who's dating who. That happens in the background, for the most part, so I end up liking the end result more than I would if the episodes were only about relationship drama. If that makes ANY sense.

TL;DR I think Criminal Minds does a good job weaving in character arcs without overpowering us with them. :)

[identity profile] lanculus.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of get that OP- I'm like that about the 4 million other Law and Orders that aren't SVU, which is strange because I love lots of other crime shows... (Evidently Benson/Stabler/Munch/Fin just had the best team chemistry for me?)

Criminal Minds needs the team dynamic for me to balance out the unsubs, but different strokes, etc.
