I really like some horror movies, but I usually watch certain parts from between my fingers – yes, I actually put my hands up over my face. And I usually have to psych myself up to watch one. Even ones I’ve seen a bunch of times genuinely scare me (seriously, don’t know how many times I’ve watched Jaws, but even with fake mechanical shark, it can still make me jump). I don’t know if it’s all about the visual for you, but you could try watching something with a commentary track (I’d recommend American Werewolf in London – really good movie and really good commentary), that way you could get a fuller appreciation for the story, but maybe have it not be so scary because you aren’t necessarily being drawn into the story.

Wow, that's actually a pretty awesome tip! I never thought of it that way. I think my problem is that I get SO SUCKED IN. Like everything else shuts out when I watch an interesting movie, and I emulate HARD with characters in a horror movie. But I'll try that!

Cool, hope it works for you!

Commentary tracks and behind-the-scenes stuff (seriously, those actors look like they're having a ball!) can make many films a lot easier to enjoy.
