So this--all of this--is me. Hooray for a fellow wimp who still wants to know the story! :D

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This is me. There are a lot of horror movies I wish I could see but I'm a major wimp. One of my favorite Japanese singers (Oota Aika) is in a horror movie and I'm so torn between being a wimp and seeing it for her.

that's okay. I love horror but it's not for everyone!

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I HATE horror movies... but I always watch them anyway. I seriously feel sick and get nightmares when I watch them. I can't even go to bed alone or with the lights off afterward. Sometimes for days afterward, depending on how horrifying it is. And yet I always, always end up watching them anyway. I think a part of me likes being scared, to be honest, despite how miserable I am afterward. I mean, why else would I continue to put myself through all of that?

One of the last scary movies I saw was Insidious. I'll be the first to admit that it wasn't even all that frightening, but I was still jumping and whimpering throughout the entire thing. I slept with my sister the night after and didn't sleep with the lights off for nearly a week after. Gosh, I'm such a wuss. D=

AAAH, this is very much me. I love love love reading horror stories and creepypastas and things like that, but you show me one clip of crazy audio and video distortion or people getting attacked in a dark room or something like that, and my cowardly butt is wide awake all night with the lights on and my curtains drawn.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_eiko_/ 2012-05-06 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this so much. I'm very interested in horror movies and of course, the killers, but I almost never watch them. The horror film knowledge I have comes from spending whole nights talking with my brother about them (because he's pretty much an expert), so I do know much of what's going on and spoilers and all that, but I'll probably never actually watch the films in their entirety.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
holy shit, me too!! I think horror stories have some of the best, most inventive ideas in them, but I can NOT deal with scary shit so I just read about them on TVTropes and places like that, and then get creeped out anyway lol

[identity profile] anonlulz.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! This is like discovering a new species! I didn't know people could get so sick for watching a horror movie.

My sympathies.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. I could never, ever stand horror movies. I just never, ever got the appeal of being scared shitless for the sake of being scared shitless. And if they didn't scare me shitless, they were always incredibly boring. Interesting stuff with horror mixed in, like Jurassic Park, or older stuff like Hitchcock, I liked, but straight-up pure horror for the sake of horror, especially gory slasher flicks...I just can't stand watching the good ones or the bad ones.

On the other hand, I LOVE LOVE LOVE horror movie parodies/homages/pastiches in other media, whether they're pure comedy (like say, The Simpsons) or semi-serious, like various episodes of Buffy or Angel. Or like that Summer Camp horror flick episode of Psych. I usually do not give a flying fuck about summer camp horror flicks, but maybe it's different when I actually give a fuck about the characters, whereas characters in horror movies are almost always people who either are too assholish or have too little personality to give a fuck about.

Child's Play really scares you?

If it makes you feel any better, OP, I'm a biig horror fan who has difficulty watching some of the countdown clip shows. X3 Mostly because they usually include torture or something like that (can't stand the stuff), but also because scary stuff out of context can be a lot creepier, somehow.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I love horror movies, but tbh, I don't find many movies actually that scary at all. Sometimes a little unsettling, yes, but not downright scary where I can't sleep at night and get nightmares. I actually think horror fiction is much scarier, since your imagination basically runs wild.

[identity profile] al28894.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
SO THIS. My worst encounter with a horror movie is when my entire family tree converged at my Grandma's house and decided to watch JU-ON. Oh, and my Grandma's house is essentially one GIANT room with a separate kitchen and bathroom. Needless to say, I never watched an Asian horror movie ever again (which is ironic considering I'm Asian!).

[identity profile] aiji-yuywell.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I am the same! I can't watch even the tamest of horror films. Still, I will watch critic reviews of scary movies just so I can learn the story and feel like I watched it while avoiding most of the scarier scenes. Even then I will spend weeks obsessing over a particular movie and sleeping with the light on. I regret it every time, but I keep doing it.

[identity profile] livenudebigfoot.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I used to do this all the time. Couldn't stand horror movies, spent more than a few slumber parties with my hands clamped over my eyes so I couldn't see the TV screen. I'd hear a little bit about a horror movie and go "Oh, that sounds terrifying. I wouldn't be able to take that at all." But it would wear at my brain and eventually I'd be like, "Shit, I have to know how that pans out," so I'd track down recaps. I was always really fascinated by the plots, but I just couldn't stand seeing it play out on screen.

Now I just watch 'em. I actually find it less frightening that way, because whatever appears on screen is usually way less upsetting than what my imagination comes up with based on the synopsis.

Me too! Can't stand watching them, but I love reading the plot summaries.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I do this all the time. The stories fascinate me, but I'm too scared to watch them.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I really like some horror movies, but I usually watch certain parts from between my fingers – yes, I actually put my hands up over my face. And I usually have to psych myself up to watch one. Even ones I’ve seen a bunch of times genuinely scare me (seriously, don’t know how many times I’ve watched Jaws, but even with fake mechanical shark, it can still make me jump). I don’t know if it’s all about the visual for you, but you could try watching something with a commentary track (I’d recommend American Werewolf in London – really good movie and really good commentary), that way you could get a fuller appreciation for the story, but maybe have it not be so scary because you aren’t necessarily being drawn into the story.

I could have written this secret. this is EXACTLY what I do.

[identity profile] ladyyuna07.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like reading them better too--I've read most of the Saw movie summaries, I thought they were interesting from a psychological standpoint and Jigsaw's entire premise was fascinating... and I don't have to watch the movie-magic-over-exaggerated-body-explosions, so it's a win-win.

I can separate my mind more with reading than with movies. Movies always do feel like some unnamed character just happens to have a camera and is silently filming a real thing that is happening (so, body explosions and bees in faces and stuff becomes more real and frightening), while reading feels definitively more fictional and "Nope, this totally didn't happy to anyone ever, so it never will happen YAY okay".

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I'm a big horror fan, but on a few occasions I'll spoil myself on purpose before watching a movie. Both because I'm curious to know the plot and because I like knowing what to expect, depending on how "scary" it's rumored to be. It prepares me, but most of the time it isn't as bad as it sounds.

I understand you. It makes me glad there are people who find the stories themselves interesting despite the reluctance that holds them back. Horror isn't a genre that's really well-regarded, often being considered a childish thing. But it has some of the most intriguing psychological concepts, themes and characters.

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Horror movie fan here - oddly enough, I often find reading about something scarier than watching it, because when I watch things I might go "Oh, that was SO telegraphed!" or "FAAAAAKE!" - especially if I know how the SFX are done. I spoiled myself on a lot of Saw traps by reading about them beforehand. The actual scenes were much less effective after that.

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So. Much. This. I'm a real wuss when it comes to horror flicks (especially zombie movies...brrr), but at the same time I'm interested to know what they're about, so I sometimes end up looking for info on the web about them, just to know what they're about.

(although, I'm not sure if I, personally, would classify the Predator movies as horror - I've always viewed them as primarily action/sci-fi flicks)
