Massive spoilers; would appreciate tagging for any potential new fans, especially with the films coming to the west soon.

Berserk is 22 years old

A twenty-two-year spoiler buffer is TOTALLY reasonable!

Not that it's particularly relevant here, but I was really referring to the fourteen-year spoiler on the anime, or the negative buffer spoiler on the movies, only one of which has yet been released, even in Japan.

No sympathy for a fourteen-year-old spoiler.

No sympathy for someone who thinks people have to watch things the second they come out (protip: I was nine at the time).

The movies have not yet come out beyond Japan, so who is the person out there who in 2012 is interested enough in Berserk to care about spoilers but hasn't read enough of the manga or seen enough of the first anime to know the spoiler mentioned in the secret? I mean, I get that remakes and adaptations bring new people to the fandom and I'm usually down for the whole "brand new spoiler lockdown for the sake of the newbs" but the first movie has barely been released in Japan and the other stuff is all still out there.

I don't get this. Why am I the only person who thinks it's reasonable to stick something about the climax of a semi-obscure show into the spoilers section? It's a spoiler. It could spoil the show for someone. There's plenty of older shows I haven't watched yet that I'd prefer not to have ruined. I still haven't seen Onisama E, or Terra E, or They Were Eleven, or Space Adventure Cobra, or Southern Cross, or almost any interesting old show that was made before Berserk. I didn't grow up in Japan and I'm constantly trying to catch up. You could put me off anything I was looking forward to at the drop of a hat. It's just courteous. The spoilery secrets have a spoilery section for a reason, and I was just suggesting that this one might have belonged there.

Every obscure series that I personally haven't experienced should have a spoiler warning even if it's over 10 years old! All of them! Every single one!

Your entitlement is amazing. Let's go through this post and look for possible spoilers for shows I haven't watched, shall we?

3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 16, 17. They should all have spoiler warnings. Because they might be spoilers to me people like me.

TBH, I don't know how many people are going to be watching the films who haven't already read the manga and/or watched the previous anime series.

That's a little uncharitable. It's not THAT well-known in the west. Spoiling the end for people isn't going to make it any more popular.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's not "spoiling the end". We know from the beginning (I'm pretty sure it's in the first episode) that Griffith turned evil, and the Guts has sworn to kill him.

There are currently 36 volumes and it's still going.

That scene is from the 'lost chapter' (the author removed it from the book) from the 13th volume.

Whatever, you all know I'm talking about the climax of the anime. I think you're being very unfair. It's an extremely interesting show to watch unspoilered, and the first episode is very oblique in what it indicates has happened between Guts, Griffith and Casca.

I wouldn't post the end of Trigun, even though that came out at about the same time and has a manga which continued until much more recently. Even though the ending isn't that conclusive and is sort of inevitable. I wouldn't post it because I wouldn't want to lessen the enjoyment of any newcomer. I don't think the spoiler tags are a lot to ask.

OP

I'm sorry, if I post anymore secrets like that I'll put them under a spoiler warning.

Ah, didn't mean to put anyone out - I was just wondering if these things could be retroactively tagged. :)

FWIW I haven't got far enough in the manga to comment on your post proper, though I think I'm inclined to agree with the poster below, who suggests that Griffith is still crueler than others apparently subjected to similar conditions.
