Of course we can, because even though we know that the events were manipulated but as far as the character's concern he just had a horrible traumatic life -- not an uncommon thing in this series. The circumstances of his life might have been manipulated but he had autonomy with a certain parameter. Grifffith's ordeal was essentially his trial by fire, the decision he was to make at the outcome would have proved his moral fiber. He failed, and turned to evil. If his life had been easy and smooth-sailing there would be no importance to such a decision. It's certainly tragic but there is clearly a right choice here. It's the same story with all the apostles and the only one I would say couldn't entirely be blamed was possibly Rosine.
