There was definitely some illusion and manipulation on the part of the Godhand to coax him at that moment. But the way Griffith's character development was set up worked perfectly with his final decision. It was the very moral dilemma for him that we saw repeatedly before the Eclipse, albeit on a smaller scale. He was always a man who did whatever it took to get ahead, sacrificing others and even his own body and mind. So while tragic and cruel, not too surprising, and in line with his previous actions.
I also quite agree with the above poster that his willing choice and acceptance of responsibility makes him more interesting, instead of a helpless puppet.
