I. . . uh, actually, I only just recently watched the anime. Despite having owned it for more than a year (maybe two or three). And I've never read the manga, mostly because I feel strangely awkward about buying it online and my local bookstore back home never carried it. SO. Not sure how much my opinion really counts here, but whatevs. I like to think that Griffith always had a choice, it's just that his choice was affected by the choices of everyone around him. He doesn't live in a bubble. The king's choice, Guts's choice, Casca's choice, the choice of the Evil Demons who first handed him that creepy stone. . .all of those choices affected his choice to later become the king of evil.

In the anime, he is utterly destroyed as the man and leader that he had once been. He sees the alternative to the choice he is about to make (to become SUPREMELY EVIL and have everyone DIE because of him or to live life as a cripple who can't even speak) and it looks worse than Hell. Continuing his life as a mortal man who needs someone to take care off him every day of the rest of his life, to be looked at with pity, to feel like he is holding others back from their dreams and knowing that he can never attain his own? To a man who has already given up so much and justified the deaths of those around him by saying "I'm doing it to attain my dream," this was the ultimate form of torture. This was a fate worse than being left for a hundred years in that dungeon Guts and Casca rescued him from. To him, it might have seemed like there was no choice because of how awful the alternative looked.

But. There was a choice. The demons made us aware of it. He could have chosen not to become a king, but to instead go back to the normal world and live in peace and silence with Casca. He could have denied his dream, but didn't. To him, this alternative was worse than killing everyone. To us, we think, "DUDE. I can't believe you're totally going to turn into a giant evil god and rape the most loyal woman you've ever known, the one who was going to give up her whole life to be there for you, right in front of the most loyal man you've ever known, knowing that the two of them are in crazy-stupid love with one another. And this is after killing all of your closest friends and letting them become demon food. YOU'RE A GIANT ASSHOLE, GRIFFITH."

. . .yeah. That's pretty much my two cents on Berserk.
