Leave feedback on their fics. Comment to their posts. If they have a public chat UN available - normally I'd use AIM as default, but I hear there's this Plurk thing that's all the rage - take the plunge and say hi, or ask them if they know of a group chat for your mutual fandom you can participate in. If you RP, send a message asking if they'd like to play, or just to tell them you like their portrayal of their character. Not that I'm saying to do all these things all at once and all the time, but you're going to have to do some reaching out.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
^ Indeed. Feedback's a great stepping stone to other conversations in most cases.

^ What No-Mercy said. Feedback to start gets your name out there. If you draw or write, contributing some fan works is also a good way. If you don't draw or write, you can still do fun little things like constructing little scenes out of paper or (if your fandom has them) action figures then posting pictures of it. Answering feedback for work is a great way to make friends.

So is "After reading your fic, I drew this little picture of that one scene."

P.S- What is that picture you used for your secret? I love it.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
^This.

Also that picture is indeed gorgeous.

Why thank you! I very much rec the [livejournal.com profile] puka_pudge icon community if you love pretty stock icons :D

Pretty much what everyone else is saying. If you like a fic, squee over it, review it. Write your own fics, go to places like [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic or fandom-specfic LJ comms... you get to know lots of people. :)

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of... Hi *waves*

Agree on multi-fandom places like the above comm, I've found it to be a great place to meet new people/fandoms/head canons.

I'd just find a community and become active. Reply to things. Don't think "is it awkward if I post a comment/reply?" because really, more often than not, more replies and comments is seen as a good thing in fandom.

Making fandom friends can be tough, but it's definitely possible!

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
i always wanted to be part of fandom and have friends and yadda yadda but i am so shy. i decided i'll just stick with the two-three people i do know with similar interests and i started contributing a little fic and art, hoping somebody might come to me and start up a conversation.

fyi i need friends. especially people to draw with. it's very sad for me, though, because i feel like most people are so much better than me at drawing, not many people are on the same level as my skillset.

Seriously, go and join a fandom-relevant comm. :D I'm in teeny fandoms and there are still very active communities on LJ. Even fanfiction.net is good sometimes, but it really depends on the fandom; I'd say LJ is friendlier.

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
i barely even use lj anymore these days, i just started back up again recently when i started writing fic. i don't even know where to find the comms that are best, and when i do there's so many to choose from, even just for a pairing i like, if it's a big fandom. or the comm is only for fic. or.. i don't know. i might lurk around some, though. it's been a long time.

ff.net definitely has a bigger base though, or at least more lurkers. i posted a fic to both lj and to ffnet, and i got about twice as many reviews over there. but so far only one person messaged me to talk. it's a start!

is this image from the movie the secret garden?

why is it reminding me of the secret garden

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's because the color tones are very similar to the movie? Definitely crossed my mind too.

I'm pretty much lost without friending memes.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, it's really hard. I've been in one fandom for six years, and while I'm not what I'd consider a BNF I've been around long enough that a lot of people know who I am, and it doesn't happen that I friend without getting friended back.

Now I'm playing in a new fandom, and the people are really nice, but it's baffling. It's a smallish fandom, and the BNFs such as they are have been nice to me but they won't friend me back. I'm clearly an active LJ member. I post fic they like. I comment on their fic and reply to their comments on mine. I occasionally comment on a non-fic post on their journal. I've written fic for them in comment-fic memes and such. What more do I have to do? I feel like a loser having them friended and not getting friended back.

[identity profile] castorochiaro.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
My first impulse on these kinds of secrets is to ask what fandoms people are in and just say "COME TALK TO ME! 8D". I love meeting new people and I know I'm not the only one. I know what it's like to be on the outside and that it can be intimidating to get in.

The suggestions here have been great. I also really suggest joining some forums and RP groups if you haven't, I've met some great people that way.

Just comment shitloads.

[identity profile] zombieroadtrip.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Just go the direct route and create a (Fandom) Friending Meme if there isn't one already.
