Admittedly, Sound of the Sky flew under my own interest radar because of the art.
Guess I better go give it a look see since I loved HR. Thanks for the rec, OP ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 08:07 am (UTC)(link)Gotta be honest, was desperate for a comparison here, and I haven't actually seen HR yet. (Believe me, I will, or I wouldn't have been using it as a benchmark!) But I believe HR to be, as with So Ra No Wo To, a slow-paced show based in character development which slowly reveals the secrets of a town which comes to represent the unusual setting of the show, and drops little bits of information here and there rather than ever giving any real exposition. Could be wrong. Either way, extremely pretty slice-of-life-ish stuff with quite artistic ambitions. I imagine Haibane Renmei is less prone to the occasional narm of So Ra No Wo To, but it's really hard to fault a series with a super-derpy main character for derping out once every few episodes.
Seriously though, even the people who like moe stayed away because the adaptation of the designs leaned so heavily towards just straight-up ripping-off the K-On! character designs. :(

(you watch Haibane NAO on the other hand, your description is spot-on, except don't expect much in the way of actual explanations XD Let's leave it at atmospheric XD)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)revolves around a young girl named Kanata Sorami who is inspired to join the military after witnessing a rendition of "Amazing Grace" by a mysterious trumpeter of the Helvetian Army. Becoming a bugler, she is assigned to the 1121st Platoon stationed in the town of Seize (inspired by Cuenca, Spain) in Helvetia (another name for Switzerland), where she is taken into the care of 2nd Lt. Filicia Heideman, M/Sgt. Rio Kazumiya and the rest of the 1121st Platoon. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after a great war regressed humanity's technological capabilities back to early-to-mid 20th century standards.
And now I'm really confused about how the two anime are related. Unless I found the wrong one?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 08:11 am (UTC)(link)fffffff them's spoilers! One of the nice things about So Ra No Wo To is that it never, ever infodumps. It's a really slow realisation that "hey, this character whose name is Japanese suspiciously can't use kanji..." "why are there so many orphans in the town..." "is it normal to let teenage girls into the army..."
But Haibane Renmei comparison because slice-of-life, loved by its fans, a bit under the radar, based in a small town, artistic leanings, atmospheric. I was scrabbling for a good comparison so I do apologise if it wasn't accurate. That FB conversation made me so mad! >.
