I...typically notice my friend's birthdays and ask how old they are now, if they don't mind letting me know, to wish them a happy one. How did know one notice that you were 18 for 5 years? o.O

Which isn't to say I haven't done something like this. When I was ~15, I said I was 18 already. Now I'm 20; guess it doesn't matter anymore. XD

I can...see that happening. I have no idea how old most people online are unless it comes up in a conversation, as for most of my fandom life I felt incredibly hypocritical in asking that. I barely notice my own birthdays, letalone anybody else's (birthdays were just never a big deal in my family), so unless they actively bring it up or it comes up in some otherwise, I don't take notice as I have no reason to.

I mean, yeah, I can see it happening if OP lists month and date only on their profile and possibly otherwise, too. In my case, I'm really close with a bunch of people on my flist, so when LJ gives me notifications a couple days before their birthday, I'm already plotting if I can write them something, whether to PM, tweet or post an entry, etc. With them, at least, I think I might notice if they were 18 for 5 years and I think they'd notice if my age didn't change for so long, but I can definitely see it happening in OP and other people's cases.

I put my full birthdate on their now, but before I was 18 I just did month and date. And I will be honest, I tend to just delete notices for birthdays - I'm not likely to do anything, anyway. I still tend to get surprised when people do stuff for me because I really don't expect much, if anything at all.

This is pretty much me. If only because I'm too damn broke to really do anything for my close friends anyway, even if I wanted to.
