Yes.... yes, that would be INCREDIBLY weird. I would, and HAVE, immediately blocked/unfollowed/defriended/whatevered people if I find out they're underage. I give exactly no fucks how mature they act or how good their writing is or how interesting their discussions are. My content is not child-safe and I don't need anyone giving me shit over that. Do you have any IDEA how awkward it is to make an innuendo-laden joke at someone over Twitter and find out they're 15 years old? DO NOT WANT. D:

I admit I prefer to avoid smut situations with fandom people who are underage, but just as someone to talk fandom with? It's not unusual for me to chat with people more than 20 years younger than I am. If you're intelligent and can offer interesting opinions, I don't see age being an issue - on either end of the scale.

I'm now a more acceptable age in fandom but I still can't really say because I don't want anyone to put two and two together and dislike me.

Enh... on one hand, I did that too when I was younger. On the other, as an adult I feel like such a massive creeper when I think about the possibility of even accidently reading any sort of sexual things from a minor. It just feels so fucking wrong and illegal.

Aside from the smut part, though, I really don't care about the age of the person I'm talking to. I know some teenagers in fandom who are already more mature than I am and I know some adults in fandom who haven't matured since they were twelve.

Eh, we've all done it. Well, not all of us, but many have. Personally, when I was underage, I lied about my age because 1) I didn't want to make (older) people uncomfortable and 2) I didn't want anyone to get into trouble because of me. I was very careful about everything.
I've since learned that about half the people in my fandoms did the same thing.

I find it a little funny some people feel that underage people can't and shouldn't read porn. Hormonal teenagers are interested in sex, is it really that surprising?

If a kid behaves like an adult, talks like an adult, thinks like an adult and reads like an adult, I don't see why I should treat them "differently". Obviously there are some things that shouldn't happen, such as RP with adult themes (mainly smut) when there are two players, one of whom is underage and the other an adult. That's just asking for trouble. (Worst case scenario: the adult is labeled a pedophile even if they didn't know about their RP partner being underage.)

So while I feel that it's perfectly acceptable for teenagers to read smut, I do think they should be careful when it concerns other fandom related activities.

I...typically notice my friend's birthdays and ask how old they are now, if they don't mind letting me know, to wish them a happy one. How did know one notice that you were 18 for 5 years? o.O

Which isn't to say I haven't done something like this. When I was ~15, I said I was 18 already. Now I'm 20; guess it doesn't matter anymore. XD

I've lied about my age in the past as well (and I suspect that a large percentage of fandom people do), so I'm not telling you that this is Morally Wrong or whatever. Just... be careful. It's not about people taking you not as seriously or your porn being any less good because of your age. There's a person on the other end who doesn't want to get into trouble. It sounds like you're pretty good at this (aside from the whole "being 18 for five years" thing), but even so, be careful.

How often does your age even come up? That's a weird thing to just throw out randomly in a fandom conversation unless you're pairing it with some other lie (i.e., "oh yeah, I'm busy now because I just started college!")

If you're lying to adultfanfiction.net or whatever, fine. I have to wonder about how necessary it is to lie otherwise, though.

How often do you mention your age? I hung around on the internet with people older than me for years but didn't really bring up my age. Not hiding it, but not talking about it, really. Hell, around a month or two ago I mentioned on F!S that I was 20 (have since turned 21) and people were surprised.

Dealing with porn/kink memes makes things a bit different, but age has never been a big thing online, I think.

I did that too, since I was 10. I've moved around a lot though so it was never a problem. Now that I'm 19--not even much older than most teenagers, but still--I would admit that I would feel creepy talking to someone underage about smutty fanfiction and the like.

Anyway, I was always of the mind that if you don't say anything about your age... who cares? Though I mostly stuck to anon memes, so age conveniently never came up for me anyway.

hee. Happy birthday! And you're right, it's not really a big deal at all. I've been in fandom since I was 13 and yeah, some places don't want to let you see the porn if you're under 18, but if we're interested we lie. These communities and stuff are just covering their asses, they don't hate teenagers. You're fine. At least some of your friends have probably done the same thing.

You see, I don't really understand people's attitudes to 13-17 year olds reading kinky fic. What's the difference between sexual exploration on porn websites (stories, videos, pictures) and sexual exploration in fanfiction? Do we all really think that teenagers would be delicate, unharmed flowers if they weren't corrupted by the HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE DEVIL WORSHIP SEX PARTIES EVERY DAY fandom?

I can understand being squicked by a 12-year-old reading fanfic, but that's only because I attribute "13" to "puberty", though I'm sure it starts earlier for some people. My thoughts are generally "If you're growing hairs down there, GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT"

Mainly I'm confused what OP didn't just let *whatever site* age them naturally every year, instead of resetting it all the time. I mean, I lied to adultff.net about my age back in the day, but actively lying to people you consider friends in a 'it has been a topic of conversation' way... They may not be totally cool with that aspect if you do a big reveal on your birthday, etc.

This is a little ranty- I'm in a ranty mood. I also have a bit of a thing about lying. Sorry.

This is a good example of why I've never had much interest in making online fandom friends. Sure, I really hate the idea of 12 year olds reading my porn. Even worse to me, though, is the idea that people can lie about whatever they please on the internet. I know that seems a little ridiculous and, well, obvious, but it's a part of online communication that I hate.

I also hate that being honest and maybe putting off experiencing the seedier parts of fandom for a few years is, less important to people than doing what they want. Children are getting sexualized younger and younger these days, and I have no desire to play a part in that. Sexual exploration is great, but porn and kink memes are not a place for children.

It's alright if you don't agree, but by lying, you make everyone who could possibly disagree with you complicit in your actions. I just find it really disrespectful and entitled. Like I said, I'm ranty, but there it is.

I'll be 26 soon, and I've been in fandom since I was 12 as well. I lied about my age in some groups but not in others, and never had any trouble going from lying to being totally honest.

But then again, I wasn't writing porn, I was only consuming it.

are you me? I just turned 17, and am too awkward about my writing to do anything but kink meme fills. :P Plus I find porn easier because, well, no plot, just characterization and fucking. It used to be a big deal when I was 11, clicking the "i'm 18" button, but now? eh, whatever.

yeah, 11. I'm not particularily happy I learned about sex from fandom at first, but kids are far from asexual and curious as hell. It's part of the reason I'm considering going into some for of sex ed profession.

for all the awkward-feeling older people: when it's my age, 17 (or 16 is the youngest I filled a meme) is it really anything but your own discomfort? do you honestly feel that me, a 17 year old, isn't old enough? Or mature enough? I think I am. And as much as I repeat fandom (or any porn) isn't an ideal way to teach sex, I think in some ways the self-education I put myself through because of fandom helped develop the emotional and sexual maturity that I have today -- that many of my peers don't seem to have. Again, one of the reasons I'm considering sex ed, and think it's so essential -- things need to be learnt.

i've been reading fic since the age of 9 but i never lied about my age unless it was to get past a lock. i lurk anyway, so it doesn't really matter. people don't care as much as you think they will, most of us did it at some point or another. and if they're going to cut you off, well, dick move.
