(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 02:10 am (UTC)(link)I understand that some twelve year olds are responsible people, I know a few. But some are little jerks looking for attention. And it just takes one little jerk over the internet to find my real name and address and call the police and suddenly my life is ruined and the people I love put through the wringer.
It scares the living shit out of me that someone I'm talking to in the fandom is that young and lying to me about it. It has nothing to do with you or your maturity and everything to do with the overprotective, quick to judge culture we live in.
I understand that young pre-teens and teens are reading smut and I'm fine with that in a general sense, but I don't want to know it's happening and I don't want to talk to any of them about anything but the most benign of topics. I have to protect myself.

If someone didn't want to know about underagers in fandom as a way of protecting themselves, I really understood that and was very reasonable about it, because I get how people over-react about Kidds on the Evil Internets and all that.
It only became condescending and alienating once someone didn't care about their legal protection, but just felt ~uncomfortable~ about underagers involved with fandom and smut.
Often from the same people who go on and on about how we need to be accepting of sexuality in teenagers. Reading and writing smutty fanfic is probably one of the mildest ways of being sexual, so what the hell do you expect teens to do if you don't even want them near smutfic?
