I understand, because I was looking for naughty things at 14 -- though it was different naughty things as there was no Internet. HOWEVER -- I've done the same as gethenian, and try desperately not to friend/add/follow anyone under 18, and drop them the minute I discover that they are under 18. I mean, no, I can't stop them from viewing my public 18-plus-rated fic and discussions. And it's not that I think they aren't worth listening to or can't be more mature than an 18-year-old. But as for following/friending/speaking to them back? I think about their parents, and how they would feel to find out their teenager/high-schooler was discussing adult fandom things with someone of my age. They'd think it was fucking creepy and it is.

I interact with my fandom friends and followers. Meet them. Send them cards. Answer private messages. And not long after I unfollowed everyone on tumblr whom I discovered was under 18, I saw a post about some girl who, at age 22, was called a creeper by some 16/17-year-old girl's parents for sending the girl a present in the mail. The minor, living at home, gave her home address to someone on the internet without her parents' permission. And yeah, of course the 22-year-old girl wasn't meaning to be a predator of some kind. But what if she had been? And how are her parents supposed to know that just because someone years older than their MINOR shares an OTP, then that means they're no threat, of course?

By ceasing all electronic communication with an under-18-year-old person that I haven't met and whose parents I don't know, I am protecting myself from accusations and misunderstandings.

THIS.

I realize I'm a few days late to this party, but you deserve to be recognized for your good sense and your rational, logical, and above all, respectable delivery of very important points that more people should probably think about a little more often.

Thank you for having left this comment. I hope it adds new perspective to things for as many people as possible.
