I know, I mean, there's so much potential in writing only one canonically straight character gay/bi, but not the object of their affections. On both sides! Like, one person keeping it secret because they're sure the guy/girl they're in love with is straight, and then when they can't bear it any longer very subtly trying to figure out if the guy/girl they're in love with is interested in the same sex...just in case, and then getting totally heartbreakingly crushed when the other one obliviously confirms they're straight.

And if, say, they're in love with their best friend, that makes it even worse because they won't want to sacrifice their friendship with that person. So say, they have to keep pretending to only love the best friend platonically while they're dying inside, and the best friend keeps accidentally hurting them by teasing them with physical contact and dating/being in a relationship with other people in front of the gay/bi character. And if the friend finds out, they would be completely devastated and guilty and uncomfortable because they can't return the gay/bi characters feelings and know how much it hurts them. Just GAH. So much delicious angst potential.

And honestly yes, it is rather unrealistic (statistically speaking, I mean) for every fic to end in "you're bi? hey so am I! And yes I'm totally in love with you too!" Not that I don't absolutely adore those kinds of stories (they're among my favorite kind of fic), but it becomes a bit too convenient after you're read 20+ of them without one of them having a real sexual orientation block coming between two characters, not just "delayed self-realization of gayness for the sake of suspense".
