Rec: The Princess series, Jim Hines. Sleeping Beauty is in love with (heterosexual) Snow White. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_C._Hines#Princess_Series

Seconding that rec.

op

thank you! that series looks very fascinating!

slightly-hesitant rec: Katawa Shoujo. There's a secondary female character who's been harboring a crush on one of the heroines (who may or may not be heterosexual, but is definitely not interested in being in a relationship with this girl). Not entirely in love with how the plot was handled, but it gave me so many feels back to my crushin' on straight chicks days :C

(Anonymous) 2012-05-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking the same thing the other day! I wanted to read a nu!Trek "mind meld gave me feelings" type fic where Kirk falls in love with nu!Spock and nu!Spock is an epic dick and even blows off Kirk's advances of friendship because he hates Kirk. I've found a couple of fics like that, but they have happy endings. I think I just like reading fic where Spock is an asshole and Kirk is emotionally tortured.

[identity profile] solo-by-choice.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
haha I have the same thing, but with new Trek Kirk and McCoy. Mostly this is because of the large number of fics where Kirk has a thing for McCoy, who gives in and gets with him in the end. I always want McCoy to just be all... "Dude, you're my best friend and I'm straight." Plus Pine's Kirk kind of pisses me off and I want to deny him things he wants :P

(edit: McCoy said Kirk was straight, which...isn't what I meant to say. Fail.)

Are you me? For some reason I find one-sided het incredibly boring, but one-sided slash? BRING ON THE ANGST.

And here's a femmeslash rec: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2808982/1/Like_Patience_Smiling_at_Grief

It's short, but excellent.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-09 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be great from an angst perspective, but the unrequited!love fics I've always found seem horribly out of character. Fine if that's what you want to read, but I seriously doubt that, say, Spock would react to a love confession by spreading vicious rumors around Enterprise or something. Secret unrequited love tends to be better.

(We're not going to address the whole "slash is out of character!" argument, because it's stupid and not relevant. Just trust me when I say "out of character.")

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. (I'm Trek anon above.) A couple of the "happy ending" fics I've read are barely in character. I think a lot of writers don't know how to write unrequited love without making someone act like a mewling crybaby (the one in love) or a viscous, raging dick (the person desired). Spock might be a considered a dick because he spurns Kirk's attempts at friendship and love, but he wouldn't, like you said, spread rumors or tease him or something like that.

...this just reminds me of the Once Upon a Time fic I want to write (onesided Regina/Emma, if you know the show).

I kind of hear you, though. I don't usually read unrequited/angsty fic, because I usually like happier things, but unrequited slash/femslash does feel a bit more angsty.

[identity profile] teh-faolkitty.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That was my first thought really. That's the main thing that's gotten me about the fandom so far. Very little of the fic seems quite as angsty as it should. Melodramatic, yes, but not much rings true.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Off topic: I'd love recs for non-angst femmslash? The longer the fic the better. Also, not teens/highschool stuff. Hits my squick buttons.

Idle wondering, are there any fics of girls awkwardly discovering they're gay as adults (after jsut assuming they had not met the right call/were asexual?

ttly not self projecting guys

If you're into Kyou Kara Maou! there's Letting Go (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3337018/1/Letting_Go). It's not quite what you're looking for, OP, but it has Yuuri breaking up with Wolfram, his fiance (who he canonically got engaged to by accident. It makes sense in context). It's written from Yuuri's POV and not that long, but still packs a punch as Yuuri realises that while he loves Wolfram as one of his closest friends he isn't love with him and not calling off the engagement would only hurt Wolfram further.

Omg, this is meeee... for some reason I even love it more when one of them is (seemingly) straight. Adds a whole level of "it could never happen".

My OTP in one fandom is het. But my "secondary" OTP is actually the het dude and his best friend. I love the idea of the best friend being madly in love with him, and the straightish guy not really noticing because he's in love with the girl. And then they get really drunk and have sex and it's really angsty.

If I could plug myself... http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2984262/1/This_Could_Be_Trouble It's a self-insert deconstruction with a gay male OC who has a thing for the completely heterosexual main character from the game he's in. And it's finished, if that helps. *shrug*

I know, I mean, there's so much potential in writing only one canonically straight character gay/bi, but not the object of their affections. On both sides! Like, one person keeping it secret because they're sure the guy/girl they're in love with is straight, and then when they can't bear it any longer very subtly trying to figure out if the guy/girl they're in love with is interested in the same sex...just in case, and then getting totally heartbreakingly crushed when the other one obliviously confirms they're straight.

And if, say, they're in love with their best friend, that makes it even worse because they won't want to sacrifice their friendship with that person. So say, they have to keep pretending to only love the best friend platonically while they're dying inside, and the best friend keeps accidentally hurting them by teasing them with physical contact and dating/being in a relationship with other people in front of the gay/bi character. And if the friend finds out, they would be completely devastated and guilty and uncomfortable because they can't return the gay/bi characters feelings and know how much it hurts them. Just GAH. So much delicious angst potential.

And honestly yes, it is rather unrealistic (statistically speaking, I mean) for every fic to end in "you're bi? hey so am I! And yes I'm totally in love with you too!" Not that I don't absolutely adore those kinds of stories (they're among my favorite kind of fic), but it becomes a bit too convenient after you're read 20+ of them without one of them having a real sexual orientation block coming between two characters, not just "delayed self-realization of gayness for the sake of suspense".

There are certain ships of mine that I can only ship as one-sided, so hell yes'ing your secret.

This is pretty much all I write (and read), anon!!! I don't know how to write schmoop. I try, and it just turns into angst and UST and whump. And I wouldn't want it any other way!!!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Gah fuck, that reminds me of this fic I read that slashed two minor-ish female characters from Hitman Reborn. To this day I still don't know wtfhat the author could have been thinking but that story made me depressed for days, and it wasn't even out and out unrequited love or anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Rec: Hex, a British TV show which aired on BBC America a few years back. It features a lesbian ghost, Thelma, and her unrequited love for her straight best friend Cassie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hex_(TV_series). Not sure how much fic there is but the angsty unrequited love you're looking for is canon, anyways.
