Notes:

If you or anyone you know in fandom writes poetry, check this out. You may be being plagiarized. Note: Please do NOT hassle the publishing company itself. They've agreed to pull the book; we're waiting for it to come down from all the eBook sites. We still don't know the entire contents of the book, though - or who else has been stolen from (there is a clear fandom-author connection, however).

I'm just going to weigh in on the "snooping" argument here and say I believe an open computer is fair game, if you didn't want anyone to see it you would at least close the damn laptop (if not log off)

I mean if it's out in the open then you can't complain about people seeing it

[identity profile] timbershiver.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know it's not a universal rule, but personally, if I leave my laptop open, I consider anything on screen as public (and believe me, I've fucked up on thiis one a few times), but if you have to lift the lid, then it's snooping.

I guess maybe because I grew up in a house with like eight people in it, and three siblings (once we all shared the same room even) I have different ideas of what constitutes "privacy" and what doesn't IDK

[identity profile] timbershiver.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand yeah, I'm the oldest out of three and had a strong sense of privacy from my little bros, which they respect.

But on the other, my grandmother, mum and aunt are/were nosey as all hell and then some, and if I left anything out that gave any sense of my private life, they were there like ladybirds, all over it.

So, I guess it does depend on the family - I am making promises to not consider looking at my (3 yr old) daughter's diary in the future, but that will be really hard :(

I'm pretty sure my mom read my diary at least once

Which is kinda of... well.. I went through my old diaries from high school recently and most of it was just me recounting my sexual "conquests" in excruitiating detail

[identity profile] wentwarth.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a laptop, but when I forget to turn the screen of my computer off and leave the room, I don't get mad at people for seeing it, I get mad at myself. If someone turned it on without asking, then I would consider it snooping.

But also, touching another person's computer is not cool, even if you can see what's on the screen. If OP sat down to read this fic, I don't think that's fine. But it's possible that they just saw what's on screen and found out about the rest of details (like that the fic was long) later when they talked with their friend, I guess.

This. I've left my laptop open before and one of my friends decided to play a prank and when I came back, took it off screen saver, there was a picture of Sakura being sexed up by Naruto and his kagebunshin.

>_<

Worst thing EVER to come back to cause she looked like she was 10.

Ugh. Still have yet to forgive him for that!!!

I personally think if you have to physically touch the computer, it's snooping. When I leave my laptop, I always put it to sleep or switch to another tab if it's something risky.

I guess the biggest issues are (a): how close the OP and the roommate are, because my friend and I glance at each other's screens quite often and (b): whether OP actually read through it or only read the part it was on and saw the scroll bar on the side to determine length (but this issue still depends on your opinion of 'snooping').
