I'm pretty sure the greater crime here is that you snooped on your friend's computer. She may be a hypocrite, but you're the shittier friend in this scenario.

I dunno, it's not like the laptops was closed or even hidden away. It was just an open laptop and OP noticed the document. I dont' know if that really counts as snooping.

But she didn't just glance at it.... she actually read it, which is really weird. I don't know, I personally don't consider an open computer an invitation for anything more than glancing.

well the secret says the friend left the laptop open, which sounds like it was the word doc or w/e on the screen, it's not the same as hunting through all their documents or whatever for something.

OP still had to sit down and actually read the document long enough to see what the content was. Maybe I'm just a decent human being and know, you know, common courtesy. But I wouldn't have even glanced at a friend's screen long enough to see what the text even was, let alone sit down and actually read it.

Again, OP's friend may be a hypocrite, but OP is a sketchy bag of dicks and I wouldn't ever trust them again if I was their friend.

Honestly I'm mostly just creeped out that you looked at her computer without her permission (open or not).

I would be pissed.

Also, I'm so tired of people doing this kind of mental gymnastics in this fandom.. In fic, yeah, okay, you do whatever you want. But they also constantly excuse men for forcing their sexual affections on Sansa in canon with that. GRRM meant for a five year time-skip to happen, he admitted that making characters as young as they are was a mistake! They are older in my head! They are older in HBO series! You know what? It doesn't fucking matter, in the books Sansa is still 13 and how she could have been/is in another universe or how old she looks doesn't make it okay for some middle-aged men to view her and act towards her like they do.

Well, if people are writing show fics, I think it is perfectly legitimate to write the characters as older. They don't just look older on the show. They are intended to be older (I still think Sansa is underage there, but not quite as much so). But if it is book!fic (does that even exist, considering the author's views?), then I totally agree with you.

Book!fic has always existed. I don't read much fic in general, but my impression is that people used to be more secretive about it before the show started and some of the fic was posted under the lock/comms with moderated memberships, but since then it kind of exploded..? I don't think GRRM ever went after fans who posted fic, threatening to sue and all that, he just expressed his dislike for it and got all discussions of it banned in his journal and on Westeros.org.

I'm just going to weigh in on the "snooping" argument here and say I believe an open computer is fair game, if you didn't want anyone to see it you would at least close the damn laptop (if not log off)

I mean if it's out in the open then you can't complain about people seeing it

Yeah, I know it's not a universal rule, but personally, if I leave my laptop open, I consider anything on screen as public (and believe me, I've fucked up on thiis one a few times), but if you have to lift the lid, then it's snooping.

I personally think if you have to physically touch the computer, it's snooping. When I leave my laptop, I always put it to sleep or switch to another tab if it's something risky.

I guess the biggest issues are (a): how close the OP and the roommate are, because my friend and I glance at each other's screens quite often and (b): whether OP actually read through it or only read the part it was on and saw the scroll bar on the side to determine length (but this issue still depends on your opinion of 'snooping').

A fantasy is just a fantasy and is meant to be private.
Yeah, the girl is a bloody hypocrite but if you were reading my personal fanfic without permission I'd be pissed.
Leaving her laptop running and her word pad open isn't a magical allowance for you to read it.

Dunno who the guy behind that girl is, but he is the very spitting image of the stereotypical creeper/pedophile/pervert. Just looking at him makes me want to punch him in the face.
