Joffrey had no character to assassinate. He was a complete monster in the books, and now he's a complete monster on TV (and playing the role magnificently, imo) so exactly what nuance or sparkle of decency were you upset about being left out of the TV show? There weren't any! Besides, now that he's a couple years older it only makes sense that he takes a slightly more active role in things.

The series is more fun for having a slightly different spin on things - go re-read the books if you want the books.
