Notes:
If you or anyone you know in fandom writes poetry, check this out. You may be being plagiarized. Note: Please do NOT hassle the publishing company itself. They've agreed to pull the book; we're waiting for it to come down from all the eBook sites. We still don't know the entire contents of the book, though - or who else has been stolen from (there is a clear fandom-author connection, however).

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)Joffrey character assassinated himself from the first book onward.
Rob has to have *some* romantic interaction with Jeyne before BOOM marriage, otherwise it will read really weird.
Mormount isn't called the Old Bear for nothing.
The viewer needs to have some background on Margaery to understand why she does what she does in books 3 and 4.
Brienne has no personality other than HONORHONOR(renly)HONOR.
And wtf is up with this sodomy shit? Is getting nailed from behind the official visual shorthand for buttsexin'? You're funny.

Character assassinating Joffrey? Seriously, you think that's possible? They really haven't made him any worse than he was in the books, except maybe made him a little smarter at times. I know they've given some of the awful things Cersei did - like killing Robert's bastards - but I could see the Joffrey of the books doing that without hesitation if he knew them to be a threat to his rule. And the scene with the prostitutes? Again, something I could see the Joffrey of the books doing.
I happen to like Margaery, so seeing more of her is fun - whether she's truly 'developed' is u[ for debate, but I like her and I adore her actress, so it's all good in my mind. As for Robb and Talisa, while I'm not crazy about them apparently replacing Jeyne, TV is not a book. You can get away with 'off-screen' things like Robb/Jeyne when Robb is never a POV character; it's harder to pull off a move like that on TV.
They've said they're not doing a strict book-to-screen format anymore; just because they're rearranging things and adding new angles doesn't mean they're going to destroy the core of the story.

See, I can understand criticisms that address an adaptation as a work unto itself. (Example: X's characterization is bad because it's shallow and trite.) But most of your complaints come down to "it's different from the books, and therefore bad". (Example: X's characterization is bad because it's different from the source.) So...you've completely lost me. It's probably not going to suddenly become faithful halfway through the season, so maybe it just isn't your bag of chips.
Personally, I hate it when adaptations are too true to the source material. If I wanted the exact story told in the books, I'd read them over again. But that's just me.

-girls getting sodomized? When?
-the words "character assassinate" and "Joffrey" do not go together. There is no Moral Event Horizon I could not see him cross, any worse thing perpetuated by anyone ELSE in the series would be matched by him if he thought of it. They're just writing more scenes of Joffrey being Joffrey. The only reason to be mad about it is if it's super important to you that Cersei be the one to hunt down Robert's bastards, but though at first I was confused about that I realized that having Joffrey do it gives Cersei a parallel with Catelyn, of all people, in this my-son-is-getting-out-of-my-control kind of way
-VAGUE SPOILERS FOR A STORM OF SWORDS: I'm pretttty sure the girl Oona Chaplin's playing is Jeyne, fake-naming it up with a fake background (Volantis is way outside of that war, and the Westerlings are on the opposite side to Robb so why would she tell him the truth about herself when she barely knows him?) If so, they ARE changing the way their relationship went in the book, developing it, developing her, banter, longing, etc. Probably cause they want to make him less of an idiot (basically) because that won't fly as well with him being 18-ish in the show as opposed to the 15-year-old he was in the book. They're making it ~love~ which makes it even more tragic than just being a couple of teenagers
-I don't see how Mormont's an asshole. He's always been written as a hard (but honourable) man and Jon's a headstrong kid
-actually dying at "STOP DEVELOPING MARGAERY YOU GUYS." Out of curiosity, were you pissed off last season when they started writing in scenes for Loras and Renly that gave them layers we've NEVER seen from them in the book? Or is that okay cause they're dudes and they're gay? Cause clearly the girl who's the sister of one half of a gay couple and married to the other (and who will soon become a recurring character apart from either of them) is a voice we couldn't POSSIBLY benefit from hearing for herself, right?
and Brienne is being developed pretty well. What we have of her so far seems to be what we had of her at this point in the book. She gets more levels in the third and we're not there yet, so idk man.
And no, season 2 has 10 episodes to tell MOST of the second book; they're splitting the third book into 2 seasons because it's long and plotty as hell. So they're saving a few things from the second book to fill out the third season (like the Reeds) - I wouldn't have done that if I were adapting, but I'm not and it's what they're doing, so this is why some things are gonna show up a little later. Cool your jets :D we'll get there

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 02:21 am (UTC)(link)Seriously, why people expect for things to go JUST AS IN THE BOOKS, and this is with every single damn books made into a movie/tv series. They are different mediums with different boundaries, OF COURSE there has to be some tweaking here and there.
I'm seriously tired of this wank, and that was even before GoT showed up.

The series is more fun for having a slightly different spin on things - go re-read the books if you want the books.

I don't agree with any of your other points, either, I just found that one particularly confusing. I do love Brienne, but relax and give them a chance to develop her character. If you read the books, you know it'll happen. Actually, I think we'll be seeing more of her in the next episode.
(Side note: Why the hell does everyone misspell Joffrey's name?)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)do you watch every episode of the show frame by frame and frantically flip through the god-awful books to find where it was in them and then rage at your TV set because they've dared to alter the works of your misogynist fandom-hating deity GRRM?

But I don't agree on Maergary. She has an important role and she carries an all house rn (Loras is cute but he doesn't really embody entirely what Tyrell can be in the balance). Maergary isn't just Maergary in the tv show, she is House Tyrell and as such she has to get some screen time.
I would have understood if your complain if it has been about Sansa tbh because she gets way too little place this season in the tv show :/.
And Joff was always a sadistic moron. There's no change about him. The only change that HBO is making with the Lannisters is making them way too nice. Idgi either.

For example (and I can only speak in vague terms because I'm trying to do my best to avoid anything to spoilery): When it comes to Robb, I'm glad i'm getting some kind of interaction with his love interest. (This seems to be a general point of contention from what I gather?) I didn't have much opinion on Robb one way or the other in Season One but Richard Madden's portrayal has really helped him evolve in Season Two and I took some serious notice after the first episode this season and Robb Stark has slowly started to become one of my favorite characters. I care about him, if they suddenly popped over to him and he was married or deeply involved with someone without explanation...it would feel odd and a bit disjointed.
But also with the development of Margery - if she's important and relevant later, they need to give her some background. It's a lot harder to throw new characters into a television series or movie later in the game, with a book it's more easily accomplished and that may be one of the reasons they are spending time fleshing her out a little. (That said Natalie Dormer for the win so really, just glad to have her get more screen time.)
Also, I kind of love Jack Gleason's portrayal of Joffery simply because he is so evil and sadistic and plays it so wonderfully and by all accounts is a simply lovely person. I like watching awesome acting and this show is chocked full of it, Jack Gleason is a prime example.
I think as long as the writer of the source material has given his blessing, which clearly GRR Martin has considering his heavy involvement and the writing of one script a season, then we can rest assured that he doesn't feel like anything is a massive character assassination - that's good enough for me :)
