Sorry. I thought you were legit being serious.

I've actually heard the whole "skin burning" thing made in completely honesty before (and in terms of all white people everywhere burn instantly) so my sarcasm meter broke for the other ones.

Another Anon here,

to be perfectly serious - I'm mediterranean, but damn white (and redhead) so I burn so easily, you won't believe it. I burn faster than Scandinavians, fact.

Just to be clear ;)

Erm, hold up you guys.

Depending on your genetics and the amount of melanin in your skin, you can burn faster or slower. This is actual science. So it is completely honest when white people claim that they burn faster than black people.

White people DO burn faster than many other people with darker skin pigmentation simply cos they're so lacking in melanin, as melanin is what provides the pigment. Darker skin, higher melanin. It's evolutionary biology actually. People in tropical latitudes/where this is more sunlight required more melanin (ie darker skin) in order to absorb/reflect UV B as photoactive melanin acts as "natural sun-screen". The problem with this is that it also decreases the amount of Vitamin D being metabolised cos it blocks the sun getting to the deeper skin layers where energy is transformed into vit D -- so if you're in a northern latitude, with dark skin, chances are more likely that you will suffer vit D deficiency, and that's also why Scandinavians, Brits, Irish, etc are all so pale. They need to absorb as much vit D as possible in very limited sunlight. Whereas someone on the open plains in Africa gets plenty of sun no matter what and needs sun-block protection more. Incidentally, it is postulated that this "sun-blocking" is also why we have hair on our heads (and many men on their shoulders) as bi-peds and why eye colour tends to be correlated with skin pigment - darker skin, darker eyes -- protects the eyes from UV damage too (and to some lesser degree hair colour). (I could get into a huge long thing about evolution, migration, and adaptation but I think you get my point here.)

But put them in harsh sunlight and they burn very easily cos they don't have the "built-in sun-screen" protection of melanin. And this is specifically why people tan. It's a defense/acclimatization to more sunlight, and freckles are part of this response too as they are pockets of melanin which are triggered by exposure to UV light. (Moles however... well, they're a bit different and the jury's sit out on whether or not UV overexposure definitely causes moles. But I digress.) This whole idea is why white people go and get "base tans" before going on holiday -- it raises melanin in their skin, which leads to protection from burning as fast in higher levels of sunlight. There's no excuse for turning bright orange tho, lol.

That's also why you may notice a gradation of skin pigmentation from darker to lighter as you move away from the equator. It's all coming together now!

So, yeah, in terms of "white people problems" this is legit, both the burning and the freckles. I'm Irish and I burn very quickly, to the point of blistering within hours if I'm not careful. But that's not to say I can't tan if I go on holiday and don't try to get too much colour too fast. Wear sunscreen + spend weeks on the beach = beautiful tan for me. But it must be done gradually to acclimatize. So white people do burn more quickly.

And that was a tl;dr evolutionary genetics/biology lesson for the day.

Needless to say, "getting a sunburn quickly" isn't on the same level as "systematic oppression for 100s of years"... but it is, nevertheless, a legitimate characteristic of white people.

mte. anon is preciously excited about melanin

Melanin is the shit.

You're just jelly because you don't have it.

You're the one who's incredibly precious about not caring about the greatest sun protective shit ever (also preciously, preciously anti-science for your precious cause). :D
