Not all 16 year olds have strong sexual or romantic feelings. Why couldn't she have a strong platonic reaction along the "omg friends!" sort instead of automatically going for the sexual/romantic subplot?

Because at the mass level, that's what the viewers want. I mean, seriously, look at all the shipping insanity of fandom, especially on Tumblr - they don't give a fuck about the plot or politics or any of that. They only care about the romance.

Under these rather unfortunate circumstances, I'm actually quite happy with the way they did it - yes, it was really awkward, but they basically got most of the romance out of the way in like an episode and a half, and can now go back focusing on the plot.
