I'm sure that they do. However, I also think you have to think of 'First World problems' in context. These are people who have very few to no serious problems in their lives making a huge deal out of something that is ultimately trivial.

It's not a bad thing to have a bitch here and there, not at all. I personally assign the concept to that branch of people who have everything on a silver platter and then complain the platter isn't gold. Those kind of people need a dose of condescending.

I understand that. But there are so many different terms to use - minor problems, petty problems, not!problems, whatever.

Calling them "first world" problems isn't only condescending to the people who complain about it. It's condescending to people from third world countries, too. It implies that we don't have that kind of problems, and that's actually pretty insulting.

I tend to just call them shit spewing entitled little shits, because that's what they are. And honestly, I don't care if it's condescending to tell them to get over their 'problems', because these are the kind of people who need a smack of reality.

I can't really speak about the third world country issues as I'm not in a position to understand it, so let's just say that I just don't like whiny attention-seeking brats and that's what I associate the phrase with.

... you seem to be under the impression that I'm defending the people who complain about petty things. That's not what I'm trying to say here.

What I mean is that, as someone from a third world country, I find the way "first world problems" is used a lot more insulting than the original complaining.

[identity profile] dragon-infusion.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I think I misread your previous comment. Sorry!

Okay, that makes more sense. Like I said, I'm not really in a position to decide whether it is or not, so I'll bow to you. I just deal with a lot of entitled whiny people atm and sort of drives me up the wall. Living in a First World country it's always felt like an apt phrase. I don't think I'll use it anymore.

Whiny entitled shit sounds better anyway.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
No problem! Glad we understand each other. =)

To be fair, I know most people who use the term don't mean it that way and probably haven't thought about this.

[identity profile] dragon-infusion.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I certainly hadn't. It's difficult to think about things from a perspective you don't share. I do my best but it's bloody hard.
