To the OP: I hope you can get to a doctor soon. It sucks wanting to go and not be able to. I second the financial aid/finding a local health clinic with a sliding scale (which is something that never even occurred to me; I just assumed that all the health places in my area were of the "this is the price and that's final" school of thought)/

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 03:56 am (UTC)(link)My insurance has a $2000 deductible and while this would keep me from going into debt if anything really serious happened (assuming they wouldn't up and drop me if I started costing them money) it means that beyond certain things that are free with a copay, I have to pay for it all out of pocket. Even for a healthy person like me, that will result in the occasional medical bill.
Because I have insurance, a clinic bills the insurance company instead of billing me directly even though I'm going to end up paying the bill myself anyway. It's true the insurance company negotiates an agreed upon price for services that is usually lower than what the clinic originally demanded, but I have no idea whether I'm saving anything compared to what the clinic might charge someone without any insurance at all (since some places offer a discounted flat fee for the uninsured).
The billing process also takes ages, with clerical staff on both the clinic and insurance sides going back and forth and sending me the occasional update that is useless to me because it is not a final bill. I once had to wait six months for a bill, all the while having no idea what it would be. We're talking relatively small bills for minor stuff, here, too. I'd love to just be able to hand over my credit card while I'm at the clinic and settle it all on the spot but I guess that would be too easy?
Someone please explain to me why US healthcare reform is a bad thing because I don't see how anything could possibly be less efficient and effective than what we have now, even if it involves squirrels running in wheels.
