I'm a female POC (African American) who is sort of new to online wank topics (racism, feminism, fat shaming, slut shaming, etc etc etc) and I actually didn't understand why people got upset about whitewashing until I visited this community about two months ago. And I guess me not having heard of it/hearing someone speak up about it was proof of the problem.

I know this will likely get me pilloried in the responses, but I think a lot of this stuff is overblown around here. I agree the media in this country doesn't perfectly mirror the actual demographics and there are some serious, but some people just have a bug up their collective butt about it.

I guess I don't understand why people can't enjoy things for what they are.

You can but you can also recognise stuff about it that sucks. I mean, nothing can ever be perfect but recognising and pointing out what's been done wrong is helpful and doesn't mean you can't still love the show/book/etc despite it's flaws.
