I'm a female POC (African American) who is sort of new to online wank topics (racism, feminism, fat shaming, slut shaming, etc etc etc) and I actually didn't understand why people got upset about whitewashing until I visited this community about two months ago. And I guess me not having heard of it/hearing someone speak up about it was proof of the problem.

I know this will likely get me pilloried in the responses, but I think a lot of this stuff is overblown around here. I agree the media in this country doesn't perfectly mirror the actual demographics and there are some serious, but some people just have a bug up their collective butt about it.

I guess I don't understand why people can't enjoy things for what they are.

I suppose since the only dip into the Korra fandom I've had is the fanart on dA, that I haven't come across the white washing, but...What exactly is happening?

All the fanart (Albeit Makorra...) I've seen has Korra in her actual skin tone, or darker sometimes, even.

I've seen a lot on dA to be fair.

It's just people who say they have trouble choosing the right skin tones. Or people who are defending themselves by saying they were inserting their blonde OC into Korra's outfit and hair do. On tumblr somewhere there's a good swatch of Korra's many skin tones though. It should prove good to the people who blame the light that comes from firebending on their whitewashing.

Well...the only incidents I've heard of was someone making her skin tone too light by accident, apologizing once it's pointed out and correcting it...and then proceeding, in at least on case, to still get people ripping them a new one after the fact. [Possibly also getting death threats afterwards as well? I wasn't completely clear on that].

Other than that, I'm as lost as you are...but I pretty much avoid the fandom outside of one friend who also watches it.

Okay, I'm not in the Korra fandom but I don't see what the big deal is over her skin color. From the official pictures I've seen the only feature that defines her as any ethnicity other than Caucasian is that she has tan skin.
