'It's that white privilege. You're saying her features are Caucasian by default.'

She has no traits that define her differently from characters that appear to be white on the same show. Get over it.

Everyone is Asian in Avatar. Get over it.

Everyone is Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, or Air Nomad in Avatar. Those are the races. No one identifies as Asian or any other "real-life" ethnicity. If you approached Aang and told him he was Asian, he would have no clue what you're talking about.

da

Technically correct: no one is Asian because they lack an Asia. On the other hand, all the major cultural hallmarks of their world are very obviously derived from real-life Asian culture (and a few other non-white ethnicities/nationalities), so that would suggest the characters' phenotypes would probably be so as well. In which case, trying to say they aren't "Asian" is just a petty semantics game.

My point was that the universe of ATLA has its own distinct races. Were they based on or inspired by rl races? Sure. But saying "Aang/Korra/Zuko/whoever is Asian" is inaccurate. They aren't necessarily going to look EXACTLY like an Asian person. There's no such thing as "Asian". They certainly aren't "white" either, for the same reason. They are...whatever they are. If you want to say that "Fire Nation" and "Water Tribe" etc. are the names of their races, that's fine. (I always just thought they were all one race with small individual fluctuations in skin tone, and with eye colors that varied by nation because of genetic distribution. But I hadn't given it a ton of thought.)

I guess my overall point is that we should focus on representing the characters as correctly as we can, and we don't need to pull irl race-wank into it because...we just don't. We can talk about color and accuracy without going there. None of this takes place in any kind of parallel Earth.

+1

You are absolutely right, and I wished more people realized this.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
FYI the creators will sometimes reveal real life people who inspired a certain character's look. Most of the time, they're Asian.

I get the feeling that some of the anons posting have never watched atla/lok though.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, yeah. I did say "inspired by". My point stands.

You're probably right about the second bit. I've seen all of both series (well all of TLA and what's come out of LoK...bout to go watch today's ep in a couple hours when it airs!) but I bet a lot of people are just in it for the wank.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-20 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
And is Mike DiMartino not the inspiration behind the titular character? He's clearly not Asian.

Is it so impossible to believe people who post here and don't think the characters are Asian have, in fact, watched the show(s) and still reached that conclusion?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No one is Asian in Avatar. Asia doesn't exist in Avatar. Get with the program.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No one is white or Caucasian in Avatar. Because there aren't Caucasus mountains... and because nobody is white. Get with the program.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...really?

Where did I say anyone was white or Caucasian?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
They're suggesting that, because you (correctly) said no one was Asian in Avatar, you must be asserting they're white.

Which you clearly didn't.

Trying to argue with the SJWs is pretty futile because they're always put words in your mouth, as you just found out. To them, it pretty much amounts to this: if you don't think the characters are Asian, you're a racist or something equally absurd.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not an SJW. Mildly interested in SJ stuff if it improves things for people, but not an SJW.

They said "characters that appear to be white". Because the commenter is white, they see the paler-skinned people in Avatar as 'appearing to be white'. Learn to read?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, what they said was:

No one is Asian in Avatar. Asia doesn't exist in Avatar. Get with the program.

So yeah, like the anon above said, putting words in their mouth.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Back up the thread a bit further.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
(anon from "no one is Asian" comment)

I probably should have specified but jsyk, that was my first comment in this thread. I am not the anon who said "characters that appear to be white". (I certainly don't think that.)

hth.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, apologies then, I mistook you for the same anon, and trying to derail the conversation with technicalities.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
No, not a problem. I should have said "new anon" in my comment.
