I see a problem with this.
LoK is an animated show. Korra is CLEARLY not white according to her skin color.
You said, "the only feature that defines her as any ethnicity other than Caucasian is that she has tan skin."

the only feature that defines her as any ethnicity other than Caucasian is that she has tan skin.

the only feature that defines her as any ethnicity other than Caucasian is that she has tan skin.

the only feature that defines her as any ethnicity other than Caucasian is that she has tan skin.

It's that way of thinking that sets PoCs back DAY after DAY. It's that white privilege. You're saying her features are Caucasian by default. Which is wrong in itself. You're basically saying everything you see is white by default. Which is unfortunately the mindset of the world we live in.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I see above that you said you're not white. Fair enough. It's definitely a side affect of living in a society dominated by white privilege though.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
When whites do it, it's white privilege. When POC do it ... it's because of white privilege.

Mmmyep. I'm out.

Comment OP

I see your point, but I still get the vibe that she was designed to fit the white cookie cutter mold of attractiveness which is small nose, light eyes, thin lips, straight hair and then they slapped on tan skin to make her exotic.

Or maybe she was water tribe?

I mean, she was always going to be water tribe. That was set up by canon before Korra herself was ever drawn: next avatar in the cycle would be water.

Her options were Northern, Sothern or Foggy Swamp. Ironically, the latter actually would be more of a caucasion appearance. Though Foggy Swamp is actually supposed to be a distant offshoot of southern.

Lets not think too long or hard about exactly how this

Makes this.

I'm going with "alternate world with spirits" and leaving it there.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest I know nothing about Avatar or Korra, so I'm just gonna guess the water tribe was modeled after the Inuit people? Well that explains some things about Korra's appearance for me. I have no idea what they where going for in that second picture though...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
The bayou people of the Southeastern US?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Complete with stereotypical redneck idiots looking for food (see Princess and the Frog.)

[identity profile] the-glow-worm.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I always got a Indochinese vibe from it. Their names are very Vietnamese...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why the Cajun accents, then?

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Key word is "distant offshoot" the evolution of skin color has been found to take only about 100 generations for the tone to change completely. Also keep in mind they probably didn't exclusively breed with other water tribe members.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, but they are also lighter then the earth kingdom people they live around.

I just think it's funny, mind.

llght eyes,

People in the Avatar-verse have eyes that match their element:
Water = Blue
Earth = Green or brown
Fire = Gold or gray (like smoke)
Air = Gray (like clouds?)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Many Fire Nationals have brown eyes, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, as an olive skinned person with dark hair and brown eyes...

I guess I'm Fire Nation.

Explains my temper.

[identity profile] anarchicq.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Tahno's eyes are reaaallly pale, almost white, I would say grey over blue, but he's a waterbender.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if he's mixed-race? There are a lot of characters who have parents from two different nations - just look at Bolin and Mako (one parent is Earth Kingdom, one is Fire Nation). Tahno could have one Water Tribe parent, and maybe one Fire Nation parent?

(Or they could just be more of a really pale blue, that too.)

I suspect the same for Asami, actually, since she's of Fire Nation origin (here (http://www.nickpress-thelegendofkorra.com/characterdescriptions.html), the description for her father) but has green eyes.

Because all POCs are white people underneath!

'It's that white privilege. You're saying her features are Caucasian by default.'

She has no traits that define her differently from characters that appear to be white on the same show. Get over it.

Everyone is Asian in Avatar. Get over it.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone is Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, or Air Nomad in Avatar. Those are the races. No one identifies as Asian or any other "real-life" ethnicity. If you approached Aang and told him he was Asian, he would have no clue what you're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Technically correct: no one is Asian because they lack an Asia. On the other hand, all the major cultural hallmarks of their world are very obviously derived from real-life Asian culture (and a few other non-white ethnicities/nationalities), so that would suggest the characters' phenotypes would probably be so as well. In which case, trying to say they aren't "Asian" is just a petty semantics game.

No one is Asian in Avatar. Asia doesn't exist in Avatar. Get with the program.

No one is white or Caucasian in Avatar. Because there aren't Caucasus mountains... and because nobody is white. Get with the program.

What gets me about the water tribe is they DID look more Inuit originally but they changed them to a more dull design. Where characters like Bolin, Mako, Mai, and Zuko (among others) can almost be placed into a real race based on their design.

Korra, Sokka and Katara are just kinda bluh. Basically the "You see what you want to see" character design.

I mean seriously my mom is darker than them and she has blue eyes and dark hair. Were I a kid I'd think Korra looked like my mom and she's white.
