Dear SJ Warriors:

Pick your battles. You getting sand in your ass over EVERY TINY THING, such as FANART, is part of the reason why no one takes SJ seriously.

You could be making a difference, but NOOOOO, WE MUST DEFEND KORRA, FOR HER SKIN IS TWO SHADES TOO LIGHT OR BRIGHTENED UP BY A WALL OF FIRE BOOOO.

Except it is a battle worth fighting. Like it or not, all forms of media do have a profound affect on people. For racial minorities, it affect us as a whole visually. When you have an industry that profits on self-hatred of dark-skinned people to the point that want to bleach themselves, you need to go full blitz.

Attack by spreading the word from the bottom up. It's not like these blog don't out of their way giving reference on painting dark skin and light sources on different color types of skin.

But now I'm terrified to even look at the blogs. I'm curious about the tutorials, but wading through a seething cauldron of rage and judgment to get there? Yeah, no thanks.

I accept that it's problematic to depict non-white characters as white, and probably will be for at least a few more centuries. (Please don't tell me it will never be acceptable. I have to believe we will eventually get to a point where it's no more important than hair color, or lose all faith in humanity. Not now, not in ten years, but sometime.)

What really gets me, besides the vitriol, is that incorrect skin tone is deemed a crime against humanity when it's really hard to do it right. I've never been able to depict my own skin tone correctly. Why attribute to malice things which can easily, easily be explained by inexperience or incompetence?

Fortunately for me, my artistic abilities end at stick figures anyway.

gee I'm so sorry that I want all different types of people to be respected and portrayed with dignity in the industry I'm going to work in.

I'm so sorry that the fact I want this completely reasonable thing makes you and other people who are probably either already racist or completely ignorant soooooo uncomfortable

Wanting everyone to be treated equally is totally legit and I am 100% on board with that. Choosing to be militant and toxic in order to reach that end is self-defeating and unhelpful.
