Joining the herd of folks confused by Marvel Woman. Because Madelyne Pryor, the only one (afaik) to hold that title, has never been connected to the Avengers and only ever held the title "Marvel Woman" for a brief time.

And if you meant Carol (or any other woman with powers): Another super-powered character would have meant that we needed another backstory. Hawkeye and Black Widow were perfect in that their skill sets are right there so they could be quickly introduced and any development done on them was as human beings, not superpowered beings. And since the MCU canon includes that the incident with Thor was the first time humans came into contact with aliens ("we learned that not only are we not alone, but we are hopelessly outgunned"), we couldn't have had Carol as having Kree genes without things getting...confusing. Same for any of the women mutants, since as others have stated the movies can't talk about X-Men and, therefore, I imagine can't talk about mutants in the meta-human sense, either. Wasp could have been used, but again, setup - for the shrinking science. This movie wasn't about backstory, it was about moving forward with the universe.

As for...everything else...Black Widow started off as a villain, yes. But she's been fighting with the Avengers as an ally since the 70s, been working with SHIELD since the late 60s. Since Marvel Cinematic Universe has the Avengers as not actually being an official team but rather more of an idea, I'd say that she's more than qualified.

So, basically, your secret perplexes me.

Yeah, if the OP means Carol it also means they can't use her since her backstory doesn't work without Rogue, which is owned by Fox.

Things like that can be changed, though (much like Thor isn't DB's alter-ego anymore). Changing the reason she can do stuff, however, would be awkward.

But OP has not yet stated if she means Carol or not that I see. She might actually mean Pryor. In which case it definitely falls under jurisdiction of the "no playing in the X-Men sandbox" thing.

Yeah, they could leave it out, but wouldn't it make her into a different character? Especially if they can't have her being part Kree either. Some changes are just too fundamental. I can't imagine "Look, we have this character you know but now all the reasons for her powers are different, ok?" working too well. Might as well just use a different character.

But I agree with you that I'd like to see her. I've been reading some classic X-men I hadn't read before, and Carol is very interesting there.

See, I personally believe that they could get a character who is a believable Carol Danvers with just the Kree and not the Rogue.

With all things interpretation, that opinion will vary wildly between fans and viewers. For me Loki and Clint Barton (and sometimes Cap, although that depends on my mood) aren't a whole lot like their comic counterparts either. But they are still good characters, and not so unrecognizable that I can't recognize them.

Ah yes, I agree with the only Kree backstory, but I read upthread they couldn't have aliens because they established something about it with Thor's backstory, along the lines that they hadn't encountered aliens before him? I was just going with that info, since I haven't watched the movie yet.

Anyway, it all depends on how it's written. I hope she's included in a good way.

Yup, it was indeed established. I was attempting to convey that she couldn't really have been in the current Avengers movie without changing that, or giving her a whole origin within the movie itself. The latter of which probably wouldn't have worked, and I kind of liked the idea that Asgard was humans first contact with aliens. Now that there ARE multiple species established there isn't a reason we can't have Carol in the future (heck, they can even say a Kree had disguised itself after crashing on Earth/wanted to study humans/etc).

I would love to see a powerful, independent Carol. She's just been subjected to so many...uh...bad decisions in her comic canon (she's gotten better recently). Seeing her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe without that baggage, and well-portrayed, would make me happy.

I'd kill to have the Goblin Queen in a film.
