[Avengers]

Because she was already established as a character in Iron Man 2 and in a movie that was packed as tightly as The Avengers was, there's no way they could have established a whole new character.

At any rate, I thought the writing for Black Widow was really well done and her character was done justice.

I still can't understand how anyone thought they made her awesome. I remember watching The Avengers like "ho man, the hate this bitch is gonna get is gonna be so good" but nope.

I liked her in the cartoons though. I just think Scarlette fucked her.

They needed a lady who was not a threat to white dudebros. If I had a penny for every self proclaimed feminist in fandom who endorses this misogynist slugfest because of the abundance of white peen to be slashed, I'd be a made woman.

tl;dr the point of the movie is white masculinity celebration, you're missing it.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Black Widow is an iconic Avengers character (as both a villain and a heroine).
2. Black Widow is AMAZING. It makes her even more impressive when she kicks ass alongside superpowered heroes and not only holds her own, but does better than a lot of them.
3. Marvel Woman is not a character most mainstream Avengers fans are very familiar with. (I'm a comics fan and I don't even know her that well ffs.)
4. Black Widow was introduced in Iron Man 2, and they chose to use only previously-introduced characters in the Avengers movie to keep the focus on the main plot. If they'd included Marvel Woman they a) would be ignoring an already-introduced, amazing female character and b) would have either had to cut the plot severely to provide for an adequate introduction or been criticized for giving the female character only a token introduction when everyone else appeared in previous movies.
5. Black Widow served a specific purpose within the film that no one else could fill (I can't see Storm tricking Loki into tipping his hand).
6. They couldn't use Storm because Fox owns the rights to the entire X-Men franchise. This is the same reason that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver may not make it into the Avengers franchise. They're working on this, but as of right now they simply do not have the rights because they sold them to Fox before Marvel decided to do their own movies and got Disney's backing.
7. Black Widow is AMAZING. Full stop.
8. Black Widow in no way shape or form "invites derision". What the fuck are you talking about.
9. Black Widow is flawless.

"Why not Storm?"

The X-Men movies are done by another company (Fox, not Marvel), so they couldn't have Storm.

I agree. I mean, I love Black Widow and think she's cool and badass and all that, but her inclusion in both the Iron Man movies and the Avengers was just confusing. I feel like they just pulled her name out of a hat filled with random Marvel super-heroines.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Er...Storm is not traditionally an Avenger. She's an X-Man, and Fox owns the rights to them. Maybe you're thinking of Scarlet Witch? You realize Storm didn't join The Avengers until just recently, right?

Also, it's Ms Marvel. She was added AFTER Black Widow, actually. They probably haven't included her for a variety of reasons. First, there might be some technical issues with whether or not she's a mutant. She's not really, but she is a "mutate" and that might be tangled legal garbage. Second, her powers are very similar to more classically DC characters, like Superman. The whole Flying Brick thing. So it would have to work off her backstory to be interesting.

And then, her backstory is more intrinsically tied to *other* characters. She doesn't have a unique origin. She was the distaff counterpart to Mar-Vell. Then there was that whole rape saga which can't really be addressed. And then the most significant thing she did afterwards was get her powers absorbed by Rogue. And everything that happened with her after that was a direct effect of that.

Much of her character is a reaction to others, and a lot of it is about resentment.

The character you're looking for is The Wasp. But I imagine she will probably be introduced if they ever make a Giant-Man movie. Usually The Wasp is only secondary to him. I see why they picked Black Widow.

I appreciated the female character in the movie, and I mostly like the way they handled her expect for that extremely stupid scene with Loki (which almost ruined it for me, god, how forced was that), but yeah. I could have used Marvel Woman or Scarlet Witch too (they evidently have the rights to use her, as long as they don't mention her connections to the X-Men or Magneto).

And no, OP. It doesn't make you a misogynist. Female characters can be handled poorly just as male characters can be. Not liking a poorly-written or poorly-acted character should have nothing to do with gender loyalty.

Why is Black Widow a "super-powerless woman"? Is that meant as in that she has no superpowers or that she is super powerless as in super weak? This phrase confuses me. :/

I'm actually rather stoked that she doesn't have superpowers. Here's this awesome, normal human lady, and she kicks just as much ass as the dudes with superpowers.

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't have rights to Storm. Most of the big name Marvel ladies are in the X-men and they don't have the rights to them. The general opinion is that Wasp would have been seen as silly to most mainstream movie goers, which I definitely get. There are also just not a lot of women to choose from compared to men. They did what they could in a difficult situation really. And since it was awesome, I don't see the point in dwelling on it.

How does Black Widow invite derision, WTF I always liked her (I feel like she was entirely in the same vein as Emma Peel in the OTHER Avengers or Fujiko in Lupin III -- she probably influenced the latter -- and I like that kind of character even if some people don't think a "femme fatale" is PC anymore (and I like how Natasha was reimagined in the Avengers movie, she's able to manipulate information out of people without resorting to sex appeal and it was a good take on that ability)

Also, Nick Fury doesn't have any superpowers either. I mean it's like you're completely new to comic books or some shit.

fwiw, op, my 6 & 11 yo cousins kind of agree with you.

both are girls. neither likes to be black widow when they play avengers. they're thor-girls. very coveted role.

If you want to go that route, Iron Man is powerless too. As is Hawkeye. They just have fancy gadgets that enhance their existing superior but still human skills.

Are you kidding? I thought the fact that she has the villain backstory was an AWESOME choice (it was probably my second-favorite storyline in the movie, after Bruce's but then again I tend to really like redemption stories) and same with the fact that she was low-powered like Hawkeye and Captain America -- the film already had enough heavy-hitters and I'm sure I would have really missed the lack of human-level combat if it had been just Cap and Hawkeye down there. I mean, yes Thor and Tony and Hulk were awesome, but there's a badass-ness about a human with nothing but skills and melee weapons slinging herself into combat with whatever-those-things-were. And she was effective. Definitely not a hint of Faux Action Girl about her, so why anyone would use her non-powers to mock her is clearly a Michael Bay fan or something. Fury has zero powers and that doesn't stop his Bazooka-ing the nuke carrier any less badass. How does Natasha possibly invite derision? I must be missing out on some skeevy assumption you're making because I don't see how any of the traits you mention invite derision.

As for the other alternatives...well, I think she was the best choice from a story perspective. SHIELD was set up already so they had the context for her character nicely poised in Iron Man 2 and she has a previous connection to Hawkeye, so the movie could establish both their characters kind of in tandem, saving time. And Storm is far more famous as as X-men member than an Avenger, non-comic-book geeks would've been like "whut?" Plus, kinda magical-seeming, which wouldn't have fit well.

I definitely hope that they bring in another female hero or two in the sequel though! I wonder which ones will be best suited though...a lot of the well-known superheroines off the top of my head have very fantastical powers that would seem at odds with the pseudo-realistic movieverse. Ideas?

Well, the other female heroes that could have been runners for her position are Maria Hill (she's kinda the female equivalent of Fury, but we already got Fury so Hill became a background character), Spider-Woman (she would've needed her own movie for the audience to understand her origins, plus people associate her with Spider-Man, which is owned by Sony), Scarlet Witch (started out as a villain, daughter of Magneto and X-men is owned by Fox, needs her own movie), She-Hulk (we have the Hulk) and Wasp (DEFINITELY needs her own movie). To name a few.

There are many female superheroes that could have filled the position in the Avengers team, but IMO they all would've needed their own movies, especially the ones with superpowers. Black Widow is interesting in that she doesn't need her own movie for her character to be explained, despite her being one of the oldest female Avengers members. Black Widow was always going to be in the movie(s), and the second proposed heroine, Wasp, didn't make it. I suspect BW only made it because she could be easily integrated into Iron Man II and The Avengers.
We may one day get a superhero movie with a female protagonist, but the ugly truth is that producers don't want to invest in something that isn't guaranteed to bring in the boys (read: they need a male protagonist). Plus they kinda needed to save the money for The Avengers.
Lastly, she's a popular character in the comics, and her character arc ties nicely with Hawkeye's (since they are partners in crime-fighting).

I hope this was enough to answer your questions?

I haven't watched the movie yet, so I'll dive right into "why not Storm?" Aside from the rights to the X-Men being owned by Fox, how in the world would they make her work in a movie that has Thor? Two people that can control the weather would be major overkill.

By that logic, why Hawkeye?

They couldn't use any of the X-men because they don't own them.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
YMMV but I loved her. I just came back from seeing the film a second time and thought she was badass. Why is it a big deal that she doesn't have a 'superpower'? Neither does Hawkeye. I'm not even a huge fan of Johanson but I didn't think she did a horrible job with the role.

That said, I wouldn't be opposed to more females in the next Avengers film but that has nothing to do with Black Widow, just that I'd like more female characters on the team.
