I just think Scarlette fucked her.

How? What do you think should have been done differently (as far as casting, acting, or both)?

Her acting truly is awful. I never agreed with that popular opinion until this movie (then again, I've never seen her in anything other than Home Alone LOL). She just focused on dramatic facial expressions. There was no way in hell I was to believe she was an amazing spy of some sorts. She was awful. And a Russian accent would have been nice.

I liked her acting but ymmv I guess. I'm also not a huge movie-goer so I'm not good at judging that sort of thing

I agree that she's a horrible actress, but the writing for her character was so good I was able to overlook that I guess IDK

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Why should she have a Russian accent? She says so herself in the movie that she's not Russian anymore.

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that was pretty lame

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
um

because accents don't just

actually never mind

(i can see how a super spy should be capable of adopting a midwestern accent whenever but lol)

I'd buy Black Widow being able to use any accent she wants flawlessly. Though I'm sure that head canon will be shot to hell if Scarlett mangles it up in her prequel movie.

And I'll just shake my head if they don't have any russian in her prequel movie.

Some people can imitate any kind of accent, really. And with how long Black Widow has presumably been alive and been all over the place, her accent probably really is mostly gone unless she tries to bring it back or is actually speaking Russian. A lot of people will adopt the accent of the place they live, even if they originally had a completely different accent. (For example, I'm told I sound like a native New Yorker because I adopted that accent after moving here -- I'm originally from Maine, and I would probably sound out of place there now. Additionally, I'm able to convincingly fake any number of accents, from Spanish to British or Southern USA. :3)

You are aware that accents and citizenship aren't physically linked right?

Your accent doesn't expire when you stop being a citizen of a country.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Yes, but some people do lose their accents, and some people don't have much of an accent to begin with. It's a stereotype that all foreigners speak English with a heavy accent. Spies have been able to pass for nationalities with a different language.

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
But all that has nothing to do with whether or not she has Russian citizenship and/or considers herself to be Russian.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
SA

Yeah, of course not.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT. This is true, but if someone has heritage that they're deliberately trying to hide, they'd work more on getting rid of their accent. If she fled Russia under nasty circumstances (something like switching sides), losing the accent seems like it would be a pretty high priority.

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
True, but that's still more hiding that she was from Russia as opposed to not being Russian. She might still have Russian citizenship and/or think of herself as Russian even if she didn't want people to know that.

On the flip side, she may have deliberately lost the accent for emotional reasons without necessarily feeling that she should be hiding the fact that she used to be Russian.

Oh, thank you! Someone agrees!

She just focused on dramatic facial expressions. There was no way in hell I was to believe she was an amazing spy of some sorts. She was awful. And a Russian accent would have been nice.

This. The thing with Ms Johnasson, is that the more famous she gets, her acting skills deteriorate (yeah, people are going to harp on Golden Globe and Tony noms and I'll tell you about star power versus talent and how in lots of cases, the twain rarely meet).

I would have been happy with even a vaguely European accent (hard to describe, but it's there) and Scar Jo couldn't even be bothered. She was so American, and just... Scar Jo in a costume. She had such a good role and Vicky Christina Barcelona'd it.
