The problem is, if we add Jan, then all anybody is going to say is "When is she going to get punched in the face for giving lip to her man?"

It will bring out the worst trolls. Especially if Hank "Bitchsmack" Pym is around.

And lets face it, you can't have one without the other.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, yeah, point. D: I still want Jan, though, she's one of my favorites, ugh, so torn.

I'm just kind of praying at this point to the #deity of all things Marvel that they go with a more "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" Hank. Because he is amazing and so cute in that and not at all a complete douchebag.

Because if they go with a more "Ultimates" Hank I'm going to throw up in the theater. One of the only scenes I really enjoyed in Ultimates was when Cap beat the living shit out of Hank for what he did to Jan.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they'd actually go with that Hank. Hell, girls LIKE movie marvel, and they are not going to give that up.

I'm sure we'd get that Hank!

But you and I both know the horde will be there, in force, demanding the other one. A frothy mix of "this continuity is best continuity" hardcore nerds of the worst kind (some just purist, some misogynist), and the trolls, who probably love Marvel Adventures version more then anything but will still scream out that Janet needs to go back to the kitchen before she gets a fresh one.

Meanwhile, the infamous pictures will be posted everywhere. Interest groups that have no idea of the multiverse or how comics work will be up in arms, screaming that this character better not be anywhere near these movies if they don't want boycotts. The news will, as usual, not do the research and get both sides of the argument wrong.

It will be a clusterfuck. Though probably also hilarious.

I really hope so :D they've said they're definitely going to do the Ant-Man movie, iirc, sooo! I'm optimistic. (I'm also praying they get Nathan Fillion to play Hank because it would be hilarious after Joss's prank on him, and also he'd be amazing.)

Oh, I know it. But those guys (and they are always guys) just piss me off. Hopefully no one ever listens to them, because they are some of the most backwards assholes... :\

Of course, ugh. I can't lol at it because I know this kind of thing effects ticket sales, and if the Ant-Man movie does badly because some asshole misogynists are going public with their quest to keep Ant-Man an abusive dickhead, they won't include Hank or Jan in the next Avengers movie. :\

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hank and Jan, you mean. I'm convinced they have to be a package deal. Otherwise, I'll be the one protesting.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I meant. Seriously, same. I adore them so much in EMH, and Jan just in general is such an amazing character.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
what prank are you talking about here? (sounds like a funny story.)

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Allegedly (I don't recall all the details or if it's 100% true), when Joss got the job as director, he called up Nathan Fillion and had him do an audition for the role of Ant-Man.. knowing damn well Ant-Man would not be in the movie.. just for kicks, and he has kept the tape. xD

I love Hank Pym almost as much as I love Janet and I really, really want to hit whoever decided to bring up that one slap during a nervous breakdown and villian mind control as Hank's defining attribute... Because he was amazing and not a douchebag and I feel so bad that now he's only known as the 'bichsmak' Pym.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Let's be fair, Hank is not a shining wonderful example of a human being in most continuities. :\ For one thing, hitting a woman for any reason? Not okay.

For another... there's Ultimates. Wherein Hank is an incredibly abusive husband who literally comes within inches of killing Jan because she had the gall to dance with (iirc) Tony or Steve at some function or other, and is revealed to have been increasingly abusive towards her for years. :\

That said, EMH!Hank rocks.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that hitting a woman for any reason is not okay. BUT it was ONE slap, and she had been coming at him from behind while he was out of his mind due to the breakdown AND the mind control that was put on him. So I think that makes him far from an abusive douchebag. Not only that but there was a long, long story arc dedicated to him saying 'yes, I did wrong', which had him almost killing himself, AND ended up with him and Janet talking things through and fixing their relationship (But not their marriage since Janet had taken advantage of the aforementioned mind control to marry him. But no one ever blames her for that). It had been almost twenty years before it was used as his one definitive characteristic, and I have no idea why that was.
Ultimates' Hank is a consequence of that. They made him the incredibly abusive husband BECAUSE they wanted to make an EDGIER version of how they wanted to see the events on the original version, which couldn't be farther from that. Hell, Peter Parker hit MAry JAne HARDER than Hank hit Janet, without mind controlling issues, and no one calls Peter an abusive husband.

I haven't seen EMH, but for what I've read, it seems that they got HAnk's personality from right after he came to terms with all the problems caused by the yellow jacket/mind control issue.

[identity profile] lilya7.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, so that's how it went? I'd think sneaking up behind any superhero at any time would be such a monumentally bad idea...

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a little mistaken. He is with his back to her, in the middle of planning a very stupid attack on the Avengers in order to save himself (The aforementioned mind control), and she comes at him from behind and then he turns and slaps her. you can see the page here: http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/04/15/comic-book-legends-revealed-309/
The interesting thing is that, as that page says: NEITHER The writer nor the ARTIST wanted it to be an actual slap. The idea was that he raised his arms and accidentally hit her. But a misscomunication problem (due to how the comics were made back then) caused the now infamous page.

As the comments also say, the problem is that no one has ever let go of this EVER. Never mind that Peter Parker did worse (hitting MJ when she was pregnant) or that Reed Richards could be an abusive husband (not only he has hit Sue 'for her own good' more than once, he also ignores her, belittles her and constantly talks down to her), but no one cares. Hank Pym hit his wife once, and he's the scummiest person on Earth.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Reed gets away with so much more shit

Now for those who are wide eyed right now, Sue was actually a supervillianess named Malice in this particular panel. She also got manipulated into being crazy for a bit there. Reed wasn't. Reed was fully sane and unmanipulated when he decided the best way to fix his mind-altered wife was to give her shit and smack her around till she hated him (it makes sense in context, albiet is still horrible)

It worked. It actually worked.

Now, it was an extreme solution to an extreme situation. But on the one hand, we go a guy who was at best only partialy in control of his actions who kinda sorta accidentally backhanded his wife.

On the other hand, we got a guy smacking around a woman who was at best only partially in control of her actions!

How on earth is guy one the guy known for beating his wife to the point where his ultimates incarnation is actually made what everybody called him?

And then, as you mentioned, in this spiderman panel... Everybody was sane and in full control of their actions (except the writers)! And Mary Jane is pregnant! Now granted, this was during a storyline so unpopular nobody wants to remember it exists, but for fuck sakes! Pym is looking better and better, right?

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not about looking better. It's about picking and choosing what parts of continuity are remembered.

While you can excuse Reed's action during the Malice arc, there's also the fact that he belittles Sue all the time. Check Civil War (horribly written, granted, but there it is), or the Infinity War crossover where Sue demonstrates that she's a very capable leader, saves REed... and yet Reed is only concerned with the fact that she's showing too much skin.

Hank Pym hit his wife ONCE. During a story where the writer has said that he never intended for it to be an actual hit. And he memetically turned into a wife beater.

Clint Barton divorced his wife because he couldn't forgive the fact that she didn't save her rapist. And no one calls him a rape-apologist.

I just don't get that cherry-picking of canon.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What the heck is even going ON in that last panel? It looks like Herne decided to leap through a window into someone's house.
