1. Black Widow is an iconic Avengers character (as both a villain and a heroine).
2. Black Widow is AMAZING. It makes her even more impressive when she kicks ass alongside superpowered heroes and not only holds her own, but does better than a lot of them.
3. Marvel Woman is not a character most mainstream Avengers fans are very familiar with. (I'm a comics fan and I don't even know her that well ffs.)
4. Black Widow was introduced in Iron Man 2, and they chose to use only previously-introduced characters in the Avengers movie to keep the focus on the main plot. If they'd included Marvel Woman they a) would be ignoring an already-introduced, amazing female character and b) would have either had to cut the plot severely to provide for an adequate introduction or been criticized for giving the female character only a token introduction when everyone else appeared in previous movies.
5. Black Widow served a specific purpose within the film that no one else could fill (I can't see Storm tricking Loki into tipping his hand).
6. They couldn't use Storm because Fox owns the rights to the entire X-Men franchise. This is the same reason that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver may not make it into the Avengers franchise. They're working on this, but as of right now they simply do not have the rights because they sold them to Fox before Marvel decided to do their own movies and got Disney's backing.
7. Black Widow is AMAZING. Full stop.
8. Black Widow in no way shape or form "invites derision". What the fuck are you talking about.
9. Black Widow is flawless.

who IS marvel woman in avengers world, tho? are we sure op didn't mean carol?

is maddie pryor even connected to the avengers? idts.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I really can't place her, lol. I assume the OP meant Carol, but idk...

Either way, Carol wouldn't be able to fit into the role Black Widow occupies.. and neither would anyone else. She'd end up a little extraneous in that plotline, which would be unfortunate.

Maybe op meant Captain Marvel? She was an avenger.

Though lets face it, after Nextwave, if they didn't use that version of the character, anybody who knew who she was would probably be disappointed, and anybody who didn't know who she was would think she was the most sexist (and as the only POC in the cast in this hypothetical movie, probably racist) caricature ever made (context: Nextwave was comedy. Everybody in it was fucking nuts and mindfucked to have the most ridiculous memories that left them unhinged)

I thought you meant Maddy Prior from Steeleye Span for a full minute and I was so confused. XD As in:

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
understandable. i'm pretty sure madelyne pryor the comics character was inspired by this singer lady.
ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Hyperbole)

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think Madelyne Prior has mostly been connected to the X-Men. She has always been linked to the Summers/Gray family - she was Scott's first wife, Jean Grey's clone, Cable's mother, Nate Grey's some-time companion. An alternate universe version of her was married to Alex Summers (Scott's brother, Havok), some other version of her tried to take over the multiverse but was defeated by Nate, and another (possibly the 616 version somehow come back to life again) tried to make a bid for the Phoenix power but someone swapped out Jean's corpse (since she needed that to do it).

If she were to come up in any movieverse, it'd be more likely to be X-Men.

2. Or it makes the super powered people look kind of silly. But, as far as I understand it, Black Widow in the comics does actually have super powers. So..yeah.

3. Really? I know a lot more about Marvel Woman than I do about Black Widow. Huh. I never thought I was outside the norm, but I suppose it's a possibility.

4. & 5. They didn't have to use her in Iron Man, and if they had a different Avenger in the movie the scene would be written differently but with the same outcome. The scene was specifically written with her character in mind because of the decision to have that character was already made - so that's kind of a really poor argument.

7. Someone can love Black Widow and think she is amazing but still question why she was involved in the first place. Full stop.

9. I have huge problems with fans that start to say any character is "flawless". Because then you're just jumping on over into stan territory.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
2. I don't think so. She has "sort of" superpowers, which are implied to exist also in the movies -- she has been "enhanced" in a similar way to Cap. But to be completely fair, the only one with real, honest-to-god superpowers on the team is Thor, lol. Still, I don't agree that it makes the others look silly - it just makes her look all the more determined and badass.

3. I can't even place Marvel Woman -- could you clarify who you mean by that? Black Widow is in just about every Avengers adaptation (she holds a pretty prominent role in the popular Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon, too), and I knew about her long before I even got into Marvel comics, so... yeah. She's really iconic and well-known. Marvel Woman I think I've only heard of a couple of times, and I still can't place her -- I just keep thinking of Ms. Marvel.

4 & 5. They really did. She played a particular role in that story, which served a purpose (she was information-gathering for SHIELD so they would know whether or not to recruit Tony-- it serves a purpose both in the metaplot and the plot of that movie, and it makes a lot of sense). Introducing a different character in a role that was not as cohesive and sensible as that would take a lot more time and work, which they arguably couldn't afford to do as they still wanted the movie to focus on, well, Iron Man.

7. I suppose. But saying things like "she invites derision" (how? The phrasing here disturbs me a lot..) and that she shouldn't have been there-- I'm torn between wondering how you could say that and love her and thinking you sound like yet another upset fan whingeing about how theiiiir favorite didn't make it into the movie.

9. I'm a huge Black Widow fan. She's on my cellphone wallpaper. I loved her in the movie and felt she was flawless. It's also, you know, AN EXPRESSION. Wow.

Could you link to a page that tells us who "Marvel Woman" is because she's not coming up on Google and I don't remember her.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, Marvel Woman is not even a character. I can't even think about your other crap, because you've made up a character, so you obviously don't know anything about comic books.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. I don't follow the comics so I can't be disappointed on that end but holy shit I loved Black Widow so much.
