A thin woman with a measly pistol against an alien army? C'mon. I know she's clever, but it seemed to me they got her out of that end battle to deal with the tesseract because they knew it would be absurd if she honestly held her own in there.

i actually liked her, but ia.

eta: and the thing with the tesseract was kind of stupid. you could argue it would have been ~batman's role in a fight like that, but batman would have been written as the one to figure out the whole loki's-stick-is-the-key by himself. in the avengers, selvig told natasha. all natasha did was hold that thing and ask "can i close it now? what about now?"

I got the sense that the reason for this was so Selvig could have some redemption after spending the entire movie doing Loki's bidding.

oh, for sure! he's thor's friend and he'll be back for thor 2, they had to redeem him.

but natasha's only substantial contribution in that final fight scene was closing the portal, which seems huge... until you realize most of the brain work for that was done by selvig.

she did get extra points with me for taking the initiative to try and close the portal again, because that could be a better use of her talents and infinitely more fruitful than fighting the aliens on the ground while outnumbered and while more of them were coming.

She helped Cap keep the aliens at bay for a while before doing that, and I also agree that her taking the initiative to close the portal (and ride the alien airship to get up there) was important, even if she didn't end up "doing" as much as people would have liked (and, indeed, as much as she herself undoubtedly would have liked). I guess I saw that as a "sometimes it works out that way" scene. I really do hope we see her do more substantial things in the future, of course. But I didn't think she was useless in the last scene at all.
