Black Widow was hands down my least favorite Avenger. I was also asking myself "why her," and it just bothered me that she looked pathetic compared to the rest of the people on the team. A thin woman with a measly pistol against an alien army? C'mon. I know she's clever, but it seemed to me they got her out of that end battle to deal with the tesseract because they knew it would be absurd if she honestly held her own in there. Her abilities simply didn't compare to the others' powers, no matter how you slice it.

Unfortunately the feminist argument works both for her and against her: she was one of two that didn't "need" powers, and yet she was one of two that wasn't special. Throughout the entire thing she just felt so token female to me that I couldn't stand it. Hot, clever, thinks on her feet, and manipulative especially... sounds pretty reminiscent of a million other throwaway female characters.

Man, even Hawkeye got arrows that fucking exploded.

I also thought that, while it seemed that she actually outwitted Loki somewhere along the way, I couldn't shake the feeling that she actually didn't, that Loki planned on her finding out from the beginning. But maybe that's just me.
The thing is: I actually like her, especially in the scene where she was basically short-time traumatised by the Hulk - I like those strong female characters to have weaknesses and not always kick everyone else's butts.

i.e. have flaws. and ia.

i liked that because it made so much sense. her strengths are manipulating people and shooting, and that's enough to handle 99,5% of what she usually comes across. but she can't manipulate or shoot the hulk.

nightmare scenario.

This exactly.

You're right, the scene with the Hulk is an excellent one, and it does help to distinguish which situations she can totally dominate and which ones are totally out of her hands. I also agree that strong female characters don't always have to kick every butt ever, but when she's the only one with that problem next to an all-male cast, it disappoints me. The Thor vs. Iron Man (and semi-vs. Captain America, too) fight scene showed that they were all equals, for example. Her fight with a fellow Avenger just showed that she couldn't deal.

nayrt

Hmmm I hadn't thought of it from that angle.

I am an optimist...maybe future movies will highlight the weaknesses of some of the male characters. It goes without saying that all characters need strengths and weaknesses.

There are a lot of possibilities tbh - Tony's arrogance and overconfidence (or his suit running out of power), Bruce's lessened mental capacity when in Hulk form (and probable clumsiness as well); Cap's limited knowledge of modern society or technology and limited patience for drama or capacity for intrigue (Thor has similar issues if not exactly the same); and Hawkeye's lesser capacity for melee fighting, not to mention limited ammo.

eta: and the thing with the tesseract was kind of stupid. you could argue it would have been ~batman's role in a fight like that, but batman would have been written as the one to figure out the whole loki's-stick-is-the-key by himself. in the avengers, selvig told natasha. all natasha did was hold that thing and ask "can i close it now? what about now?"

in the avengers, selvig told natasha

I got the sense that the reason for this was so Selvig could have some redemption after spending the entire movie doing Loki's bidding.

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, for sure! he's thor's friend and he'll be back for thor 2, they had to redeem him.

but natasha's only substantial contribution in that final fight scene was closing the portal, which seems huge... until you realize most of the brain work for that was done by selvig.

she did get extra points with me for taking the initiative to try and close the portal again, because that could be a better use of her talents and infinitely more fruitful than fighting the aliens on the ground while outnumbered and while more of them were coming.

She helped Cap keep the aliens at bay for a while before doing that, and I also agree that her taking the initiative to close the portal (and ride the alien airship to get up there) was important, even if she didn't end up "doing" as much as people would have liked (and, indeed, as much as she herself undoubtedly would have liked). I guess I saw that as a "sometimes it works out that way" scene. I really do hope we see her do more substantial things in the future, of course. But I didn't think she was useless in the last scene at all.
