I am torn on whether to tentatively poke the black spider and see if he's as soft as he looks or to run away screaming in terror.

Well, according to wikipedia article on them, they are docile, and unlike other tarantulas, they are less likely to use their hair as a defensive weapon, and they are popular pets, so maybe if you saw one as someone's pet, you could pet it, and if you ran into one randomly, you could run away screaming?
