[Spartacus: Blood and Sand]

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't watch this so I'm not going to agree or disagree, but I want to mention that there are many, many forms of rape, some less obvious than others.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Lucretia but it was rape. If Crixus had said "no", especially at the beginning, she could have get him killed. He had no choice then. I agree that it wasn't rape according to the Roman law, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
didn't she leave him alone when he told her he didn't want to, even though she thought it was last chance to get pregnant?

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
At the beginning of Blood and Sand he wants to fuck her and she's starting to have some feelings for him so things are different, but when she decided to start having sex with him, Crixus wasn't allowed to say no.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
he told lucretia that not having sex would help his performance in the arena (and help him stay alive) in the upcoming fight, so... not wanting him dead lucretia left her alone. i don't think she would have taken no for an answer if he had just told her that he didn't want her

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Right? And look what happened to Crixus and Naevia when Lucretia discovered that Crixus loved someone else. Even though she herself was already truly in love with Battiatus (imo).

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Would Batiatus have really let Lucretia kill what was his top gladiator at the time (since Gannicus had just left)?

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe Batiatus would have only whìpped him but that doesn't change the fact that it was rape. And anyway, Lucretia was very capable of killing Crixus no matter what.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry that happened to you, anon, but I'm not sure how sex against a person's will in a situation where they couldn't meaningfully consent anyway is not rape.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It was rape by coercion. While I think Lucretia was genuinely attracted to Crixus and wanted him to be attracted to her, she didn't give him any choice, and he would have refused if he could have. It's not even just the power difference that's the problem -- Lucretia made Crixus (and some of her other slaves) have sex even when they absolutely weren't consenting.

In the show's setting, I'm not sure it would have been seen as rape, but it fits the definition. I'm sorry if you feel that it trivializes your experiences. But I do think it's important to recognize that sexual assault can occur in different ways.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sorry for what you went through anon, but there are many different types of rape.

When someone lacks the ability to consent, it's rape. Crixus (like all the other slaves) was not allowed to say no. Heck, it was rape with Melitta and Gannicus even though they wound up falling in love. And in that situation, they were BOTH victims.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry that you went through that, anon. However, Crixus was not allowed to say no.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
As the others have said, it was rape. Crixus wasn't given an option. He was a slave, like the others, and he *had* to do what his masters asked or risk either punishment or death. He didn't enjoy it, but he had to fake his enjoyment to please Lucretia. At one point, his girlfriend even told him he needed to act a lol better than he was doing because Lucretia was beginning to suspect he didn't want her (on account of the 'limp' performances), and that would have meant bad things - hence leading to that awful scene in your screen cap and Lucy Lawless' godawful sex face. The look on *his* face wasn't one of anticipation at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
what do you have against Lucy Flawless?

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely nothing. I just think she's got one of the unsexiest O faces I've ever seen (like that scene above with Crixus). Meaning when she's acting aroused, she does annoying things with her mouth and tongue that almost always throws me out of a scene. Otherwise, she's a great actress.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
AGREED. I <3 Lucy Lawless but if I'd seen her in a sex scene back in the day I don't know if I would have been able to get all that into Xena fandom.

Some of the Xena/Gabrielle fic got weird enough without that mental image.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Good Lord. I don't know how an actress who was so good at conveying hopeless regret, grief, rage, happiness, resignation, was so, so awful at conveying sexual arousal. I liked Ares and Xena, but LL's need to do those weird things with her mouth and tongue about ruined their scenes for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If he was coerced on pain of severe punishment/death and he didn't want it, it's rape. I don't know what the hell your definition of rape is if you think otherwise.
