One: Rule One: Joss is a sadistic lying liar who lies. Two: Joss actually wasn't responsible for this, it was mandated, and he even pointed out 'aw, crap, people are gonna blame me for this even though for once I'm not responsible.' Three: Avengers is a Marvel-universe movie. The only (the ONLY) death in comic book world that has stuck is Uncle Ben. Even Jason Todd and Bucky came back from the dead. There is every chance of him coming back with Fury stating 'I needed the Avengers to be avenging SOMETHING, didn't I?'

Uncle Ben came back for like... four issues. I love pointing this out because it means that NO DEATH in comics has been permanent, ever. SO yeah.

That doesn't mean it extends to comic book movies, though -- half the reason it happens in comics at all is because they're written by 3985905 people.

Do non-permanent resurrections really count, though? I mean, four issues isn't even a drop in the bucket in the terms of Spider Man history.

I was having this debate with my friend last night, because Ted Kord came back, but it's not like it should count, because from the very beginning of the storyline where Booster went back in time and saved him, it was always intended that he would have to go back and die like he was supposed to Set Things Right. My buddy said it counts, but nah, that totally doesn't.

As was said above, the main reasons characters constantly die and come back to life in comics are due to limitations and circumstances that the movies do not have (i.e. Writer #343948 fucked everything up, Writer #343950 has to come in and do dumb things to make it like it never happened) and as much as Marvel movies approximate the feel of a comic book, I don't think it's safe to say yet that something as cheap and dumb as poorly-justified fakeouts on deaths that were meant to be emotionally affecting and move the entire plot is something they're going to aspire to emulate.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
True, but I still say not to count him out as fully dead just yet (he's just mostly dead, and, after all, mostly dead is still slightly alive) since a) he died on a SHIELD facility, so if any place had the technology to bring him back and justify it in the Marvelverse, that'd be one of the places I'd bet the farm on it happening and b) he 'died' under master chessmaster Nick Fury's watch, and if anyone would take a man close to death, lock him away and patch him up until needed, and use the presumed death of said man to galvanize a group of superheroes into teaming up to stop a bunch of alien invaders and a would-be godking, it'd be Fury. So I'm still not convinced it's permanent.

Particularly since it wasn't Joss's idea in the first place, so the situation you described could happen.

So we should file 'Coulson being dead' under stupid-ass decisions we've decided to ignore and call it a day. :DDD
