See, that's the thing-- I don't WANT him to be dead, but I also don't want him to be alive by some stupid asspull, because then it just wouldn't mean anything any more because if Coulson lives then nobody should really stay dead.

Honestly though, I saw his death coming, but it was still super upsetting. \: (Btw, I reeeeeally want a poster and/or action figure!!)

I didn't see his death coming, because I swear there's an interview somewhere where Joss said Coulson made it through the whole movie. I was honestly expecting Hawkeye.

Coulson had an awesome death--went out like a boss. And it meant so much, so I agree, it would suck if the death was cheapened.

However, if his being alive creates more conflict than it resolves, it could work, story-wise. His death galvanized the Avengers and made them pull together. If they realize Fury lied about something like that and deliberately manipulated them, even for the greater good...well, they were already looking sideways at SHIELD, but something like that could be enough to make the group, even Clint and Natasha, break off from SHIELD in a way that makes one hell of a mess. And that could be a really good secondary conflict to whatever Big Bad Thing is Attacking Earth in A2.

(Heck, if we go with the Coulson-as-Vision theory--not my favorite, but interesting--you'd also get the conflict of Coulson/Vision deciding to stay with SHIELD and deal with the manipulation or join the Avengers if he's had enough of Fury, even if Fury is his friend.)
