WHEDON ALWAYS LIES

I just saw it again tonight. SON OF COUL. PORQUE. If it doesn't get turned around somehow, I will actually never stop being sad about it (we're finally at a point where the heroes are dealing with SHIELD all the time, this should have been the starting point to him becoming A BIGGER CHARACTER for fuck's sake! A living thread of continuity through this series, cut down when he's finally in position to get a lot more to do. MY HEART). At least Joss is moving up from the Serenity-type deaths; in which the whole rest of the movie would have gone JUST THE SAME if the character had lived but they just had to toss it in there simply to make us cry. Coulson's death at least had an effect on the story, and a big one. As a direct result, the team solidified. He went out like a boss and is remembered a hero

and if I go to the fic memes right now and request "Coulson wakes up in a coffin BECAUSE HE'S FUCKING IMMORTAL" fic, that's my business!

All of this, yes. Maybe it's my fault for reading too much fanfic to hype myself up, but I was/am totally in love with the idea of Phil Coulson: Super(hero) Nanny and Agent of SHIELD. But even when he died, I was glad it wasn't like Wash's death--something utterly pointless except for a brief moment of shock that only works the first time you see it. Coulson come out the biggest hero of them all.

Though I called Whedon a liar in the theatre, finding the interview again, it seems that if anyone was lying, it was Mr. Gregg. Maybe it was sincere, maybe it was Loki-class wordplay, but... I dunno, were they still filming back in September?

(I'm kind of in the "he was an android/The Vision all along" boat. Maybe Howard Stark built him, I don't know.)

(And cellists use bows...)
