This is really great, OP. :) I'm in a similar situation. Most people in my family are homophobic, but finding fandom at an early age has ensured that I'm not. I want to be able to befriend people and know how amazing they are with objective eyes, not deprive myself of something/someone great through bigotry, and I'm glad fandom has given you the chance to do the same. ♥
