If you put in less work than the superfan who does real all the comics, buys the superhero encyclopedia and spends more time than you on their fandom hobby, then, yes, you are less of a fan WHEN COMPARED to the other person.

Don't try to act like you are just as big as a fan. You're not. You are just a fan. Not a superfan.

And I am tired of fans of the movie being HUGE snobs when it comes to reading the comics. Like it's icky and beneath them. Because heaven forbid you are seen as a comic geek. Movies? All the cool kids are watching it. Comics? Never. For so long the comic book fans of these superhero characters have been mocked and looked down on. So, don't think you can call yourself the same level of fan as comic book readers if you don't read the comics.

Agreed.

I mean, both are fans, but you've got to admit that someone who has been collecting and reading comics for years and knows all the stories and backgrounds and intricate plots from over the years - that is a superfan. Someone who loves the movie and thought it was awesome and now loves the Avengers - that's a fan. Nothing wrong with either, but there is a difference.

But...what about someone who is a movie superfan? I mean the people who own all the Marvel-verse movie DVDs, have watched every deleted scene and extra, listened to every interview, written a ton of fic, etc. etc. etc. I would consider someone like that a superfan of the movie-verse.

I agree that anyone being snobby about comics as a medium should STFU, but I just feel that way about any medium. But just because someone is only into the movies doesn't mean they necessarily spend less time invested in being a fan.

-- Is DEFINITELY just a casual fan of the movies, so has no dog in this race.

Then they are a movieverse superfan but not an over-all superfan.

Yay multiple levels of fannishness... I guess (I am totally a casual fan too).

This this this this this.

Is OP a fan? Definitely! And they can have all the "feels" and love and everything. But just because you watch the movies doesn't mean you necessarily know everything about the characters- in that world, sure. I agree they're separate. But they ARE separate. It doesn't disqualify your personhood or opinions about the movies! But it's still... different.

Don't run in comic book fan crowds if you don't read the comics. There's certainly a big movie-verse fandom out there!

Comic books are still books, it's the same thing as liking a show like "sherlock" without reading the books. Or playing a new gen video game without having played the rest of the series (I'm thinking like Legend of Zelda). Can you be a fan of the specific thing, and even the characters? yes! Do you know everything about the characters or the entire world? ... no.

It bums me out that people who see the movie titles get turned off from reading comic books... yeah there's a lot of shit, but if you look through you can discover some really amazing work. I know after watching The Dark Knight I rustled up some really great batman books (long halloween, etc), and that lead me to old school vertigo titles and just.... everything amazing, ever..... So comic book movies can actually.... do good for the comics themselves...
