Oh I agree with you, it's a lot less about spirituality and the magic that comes with it. Many benders do seem like assholes who have no spiritual connection to bending at all, heck, the fire nation soldiers in A:tla was far more spiritual than the triple threat triads for example. I mean that's the whole reason why the equalist movement exists, I'm positive that non-benders would have no reason to hate benders if they displayed any spiritual enlightenment along with their bending. That's what the new industrialized era is like, everything's mass produced including bending. Anyway, I'm sure it was very much intentional, I feel that helped to differentiate between the series and give it a more 'mature' feeling.

Personally, I sometimes miss the sheer power of bending that A:tla displayed. Katara could kick Korra's ass at waterbending any day. Everybody is just so stuck up with their small scale pro- bending moves that it's starting to get boring. I wish they got more creative with the ways they fight, heck, I for one enjoyed watching Tahno cheat during the match, he was at least mixing it up a little.

I agree. I guess it has something to do with the other side not using bending. Still, I miss fights like the one between Zhao and Zuko, or Katara and Hama. Just the elements clashing together. The only scene that came close to the epicness was the fight scene last episode. The one this episode was okay, but kind of short and a bit unsatisfying. I'm not the first one to point this out: why didn't they just bend the earth beneath the mechas? Toph and Bumi would have done it!

But well, that's one of the reasons I look forward to Korra finally entering the Avatar State. I want some huge-scale bending. Maybe conjuring a tornado or something.

I'd also like some more creative takes on bending. For firebending, we have Zuko's breakdance moves, we had fireblades, etc. For waterbending, we had water whips, water-tentacles, waves, ice, etc. There was just so much variation!

I keep telling myself that it's just because it's so short, though. We're seven episodes in, that's nothing.

True: their bending lacks the raw power A:tla exhibited. It's more controlled and refined, but it's more of a commodity than a way of fighting for your life. I guess 70 years of peace time has had an impact on how people bend.

But well... maybe they'll improve by the end of the series?
