I think you're right. Admittedly, I didn't come into A:tlA until checking that free LoK ep out on itunes, but I do notice a less 'magical' tone than from what I've seen of the original, and I like that tbh. I've never been much of a sequel fan, so I think that the creators establishing it as its own individual show with a completely different feel and direction from A:tlA will help it as a spin-off. Also, a little bit of steampunk never hurt anything, IMO. :3

And I think they're approaching the spirituality from a different perspective. Korra just doesn't strike me as a very spiritual personality to begin with. She's more of a hands-on, action oriented, 'let's get off our butts and get stuff done' type of girl and from the look of things, she's gonna have to get in touch with her spiritual side before she can master airbending, which with her having a decent grasp on the other elements seems to be her last big obstacle to achieving the ability to fulfill her role as Avatar. So, I can definitely see some of that old magic being revisited later on.
