Contained? Unfortunately no :P. I'd say in Marvel the characters in different teams/books interact even more than they do in DC, since they're mostly all in one city.

However, good series that aren't tie-ins to event comics (when the company knows they've got the readers suckered in and can dick around with them and make them buy loads of shit until the event ends) shouldn't do that -- makes readers frustrated and more likely to drop the title.

More often, a character will say "sorry about [xyz complication] I was busy with [bizarre incident that makes no sense]", and there'll be a little asterisk to a footnote saying "read Series Title #whatever to learn more!" but it won't mean you can't understand the story at all without reading the other story. It varies a lot, I guess, depending on what new idea the editors have got into their heads.

This is why I don't follow current comics. I just buy trades of old series that have been already completed.
