I can see where the 'magical' is though. You have a bunch of kids travelling around a world on magical adventures such as giant koi fish,
amazonkyoshi warriors and hanggliding in old temples. LoK so far seems more grounded in reality consequences and technology. I'm exceedingly glad for this. I was originally disinterested because I thought it would be an AtLA kids travels around the world again and it isn't. Perhaps that's just the type of story you're into right now? Grand epic adventures with kids discovering the land could be you thing - it was my thing once, but hasn't been for me for a long time. Maybe because the target audience is a touch older this time, the creators thought they could go for something completely different? Either way, I'm really glad LoK isn't ATLA 2.0*potential spoilers*
While here (LoK) we have technology discoveries and bending being used in different ways like as an energy source and a sport of all things. We have the coolest looking scooters, Pabu, an entire air bender family, Lin metal bending her spiderwebs all over the place. Amon I find incredibly creepy to look at, while I can actually understand why some of the people would side with the equalists - something I had wondered about in the previous show was how non-benders felt about bender fights breaking their cities/shops. Poor Cabbage man. There's nonbenders as main characters who can hold their own, the main character is someone I can really connect with.
And the main characters. I like the main characters. In Atla I was stuck with disdain for Aang and Katara, it took until season 3 for me to find Zuko mildly acceptable and the only characters I was honestly invested in were Sokka, Iroh and Toph. I need more than 3 characters to click with a show. But in Korra I get Korra (who eclipes my enjoyment of Sokka/Iroh/Toph combined), Tenzin, Penma, airkids and Bolin. I'm awaiting judgment on Asami as I haven't seen the latest episode
I didn't mention Mako because so far? He reminds me of AtLA!Katara. I didn't like AtLA!Katara. LoK!Katara I do not mind.
Oh woops, tl;dr I got all defensive over how much I liked LoK and didn't care for AtLA and then rambled a bit. Also I really hope there's going to be a LoK artbook because it's all gorgeous backgrounds and detail in the technology.
