I think the difference between doing this in fandom and doing this in real life though, is the difference of fantasy.

I think a lot of women in fandom can be critical of appearance when fantasizing about male celebrities, and can say some harsh things, but I feel like it's pretty harmless when you aren't actually applying it to your real love life.

I find a problem when people (men more often, though definitely not exclusively) treat people and judge people as harshly that they encounter in their daily life. I think it's okay to be like, "Eww, I'm not fapping over Lady Gaga, Rihanna is so much more attractive" than "No, girl from my biology class, I won't go on a date with you because you're not as attractive as Rihanna."

But I don't think people should insult each other based on their tastes either.
