I certainly don't mind stumbling along with the canon background for certain characters. Hell, sometimes I forget stuff in the canon I did read and watch and then get confused in the fics. :P
Some of the individual characters intrigue me quite a bit, actually. Love Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, and Hawkeye, especially, though I'm certainly partial to Hulk and Captain America, as well.

For Iron Man, I'd suggest Matt Fraction's series, up through the first omnibus. It's become pretty bad recently, but the early issues were damn good, and it retconned in some movie stuff, such as Tony being prisoner in the middle east instead of Vietnam. It takes knowledge of what HAPPENED in Civil War, but doesn't require it as reading. But, then, most recent Marvel stuff requires that knowledge* Also, Iron Man: Extremis is an excellent story and features the artwork of Adi Granov, who also designed the Iron Man suit for the first movie.
Hawkeye just had a GREAT short that I don't think requires a lot background other than that he's been part of the team for a very long time: Avengers Solo: Hawkeye, by Jen Van Meter. It's in trade now.
Captain America: Winter Soldier TPB (not to be confused with the ongoing Winter Soldier series) is pretty good. Bucky - who was a kid in the comics, but you seem to have enough knowledge that I'm guessing you know that - turns out not to be dead and it's not a pretty sight.
John Byrne's run in the 80s is fairly-well hailed as one of the best before Brubaker (anything Brubaker is amazing, imo, but at lot of that was Bucky!Captain America rather than Steve) That's collected in "Captain America: War and Remembrance".
Hulk I can't do, I'm afraid.
