I'm in the UK and I saw it! And was pleasantly surprised at how good it was!

The only reason my friends and I went to see it though because we had all read the books after one of us spent a lot of time in New Zealand when we were teenagers. Otherwise I know I would have totally written it off (advertising was non-existent). :(

It's a shame though. I would have looked forward to a sequel.

To each his or her own. With the exception of Episode 5, I think LoK's been awesome so far, and I love Korra (and probably Tenzin and Lin Bei Fong, too) more than I ever did any of the characters from AtLA.

Am I the only one who didn't find it hard and intimidating to get into American super-hero comics? (Silly question - I know I'm not the only one, I just hear that it's so hard so often that sometimes it feels like I am.)

I got into X-men in the 90s because of the cartoon. The comics had different characters and different stories and all sorts of stuff going on. I just read it and managed to get the gist of what was going on after a few issues.

I dropped comics for a decade or so and started up again last year after watching Thor and Captain America. I hadn't read either of those titles prior but, as with the X-Men, I just started reading.

Now days there's such a wealth of information available online, I feel like it's easier than ever to just jump in and, if you just have to know what happened in Uncanny X-Men #125, you could probably find a synopsis somewhere (and here it is: http://marvel.wikia.com/X-Men_Vol_1_125).

Hell with that. I'm 30, and have spent all my fucking life wanting to go to Disneyland. When I finally get to America, I'm going, adulthood be damned.

In one universe, Captain America and Iron Man got married. (Actually, since there are many different universes we know nothing about, it's entirely possible they got married in more than one universe.)

Also, Loki doesn't care if he's a woman or a man or something else, though I wouldn't call him gay (his issues with Sif and his obsession with Thor does beg a few questions, though).

If I had to bet one of them being 100% being straight, it would be Hawkeye. Thor's also pretty exclusively into women, but he's a god. Who knows what he's into.

I live in CA and I REALLY want to go to the equivalent event they have at California Adventures. But gaaaah. I need more money.

Go ahead and judge me, OP. I just got back from WDW (I'm 26) and I loved every. freakin. moment. of it. First of all, you DO realize all the rides aren't like "It's a Small World," right? There are more intense rides. There are amazing stage shows to watch. There are also areas aimed for adults...like many of their fine-dining areas, and I have NEVER had a bad meal at Disney. There's spas and boatings, romantic firework cruises, `PGA golf courses...and amazing seasonal events, like Epcot's International Food and Wine Festival.

I will also say that most theme parks (in the Orlando area, at least) are close to Disney in prices, and do not serve anywhere NEAR the same level of customer service. Maybe theme parks aren't your thing. That's OK. But don't try to make others feel bad for enjoying something you despise, because all we're going to do is ignore you.

Yeah, I've seen 10% around often. I guess this thread shows that people definitely fake/parrot statistics, so now I'm not sure.

I agree with you about Inception. It's pretty obvious, watching it, that they wanted to show off this really neato dream-sharing idea that one of the writers had (which, to be fair, is pretty neato) and the story was just a vehicle to do that. So, ultimately, the story being told wasn't really that...interesting.

Made me think, though, so that was nice.

Comment fail!

Obviously getting into super-hero comics is easier than commenting in the correct thread.

There is a strong element of personal taste in here, that's for sure. We can just be over here, anon, enjoying Korra more than A:TLA and wondering what people are on about.

Another person who didn't learn about Fasspasses until it was too late, perhaps?

They find these kind of numbers in a lot of places - US, UK, Sweden, etc. I've never seen an esitmate that goes over 5% for the LGBT population (and in places like the UK, I've seen it as low as 1.5%). And it's not just census data, it's privately-funded studies by universities and organizations, etc. I doubt that everyone everywhere is lying, although there probably is a margin of error.

Fun (or 'I'm bored and I want to tell a story') fact: when I was younger, we used to watch Keeping Up Appearances with subtitles. 'Periwinkles' would be translated with 'alikruikjes', which, to my parents' great amusement, I thought were a type of amphora ('kruik' meaning pitcher and I associated ali with Ali Baba, I guess?). My parents explained to me that 'alikruikjes' were (courtesy of Wikipedia) "Littorina littorea, is a species of small edible sea snail". It wasn't until years later that I learned that perwinkle is also a type of flower and that the whole thing was probably meant as yet another joke (is she talking about moluscs or flowers?). My parents, however, refuse to believe me and are convinced that Hyacinth has a service decorated with sea slugs :)

Not that I disagree with the triangles, but I thought the show was now going to be 24 episodes?

Congrats about your best orgasm ever.

Loki. Definitely Loki.

It helps to get hold of a reading list. For example, I got it into my head that I wanted to read Batman in chronological order; you'll see a lot of "recommended reading" lists but if you really wanted to get in-depth, you can't go wrong with this: http://www.therealbatmanchronologyproject.com/the-modern-age/

What that link entails is basically all the (somewhat subjectively) canonical Batman material stretching from 1986 (Crisis on Infinite Earths) to 2011 (Flashpoint), with some pre-1986 material (i.e. pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths) serving as background. This is NOT a "recommended reading" list. There's good stories, great stories, and some really bad stories. I wouldn't recommend Knightfall to anybody despite it being canon, or Gotham After Midnight for that matter. It's all very subjective -- I don't think Gotham After Midnight should be considered canon at all, yet he throws it in while snipping others out on really small details. Still, it's at the very LEAST a good guide.

What's interesting is that there is a LOT of overlap between Batman and the rest of the DCU, largely due to his involvement with Justice League. Due to this, most of the major events, including all but maybe one or two of the Green Lantern-centric events like Blackest Night, involve Bats in some fashion. That said, you can skip most of the early crossover events like the whole thing with the Manhunters -- they get really silly at times. I enjoyed Cosmic Odyssey but that's 'cuz Mike Mignola did the art and it was short to boot.

I would also recommend using Wikipedia and TVTropes to help fill in some details. And if you have a comic book nerd friend, ask him what's up too.

I don't think you have to be 100% uncritical to be a "true fan". No fandom is perfect! It's okay to recognize that there are flaws and shortcomings and still love that fandom, warts and all.

[identity profile] ooh-mrdarcy.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too.

I think by "disturbing" you mean the transformation Tallis goes through once she "really" encounters with Mythago Wood an its creatures, becomimg the tree-woman and all that?

I guess that depends on your age- I was about ten years older than you when I first read it and found it absolutely fascinating and somehow like... some strange kind of "coming home" with all that shamanic stuff, the masks, the "bird spirit land"-thing... But I'm quite interested in all things shamanic and/or neolithic anyway.

But I guess I understand what you mean and as far as I remember, "Mythago Wood" isn't as disturbing as "Lavondyss" (this one's the sequel, by the way). It's strange as well- these books are some of the strangest pieces of fantasy literature I've read- but more "harmless".

...and now that I've read this secret I have the urge to read them again. Thanks, OP.
